2. THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT BEAUTIFUL PLANTS IN DESERTS, BUT THERE ARE ALSO EXTREMELY POISONOUS PLANTS AS WELL. FOR EXAMPLE, THE DOGBANE. IT’S VERY POISONOUS AND GROWS IN MOIST PLACES. IT ALSO LIVES IN DITCHES AND AGRICULTURAL FIELDS. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF PLANTS IN THE DESERT, BUT I CAN’T NAME NOR SHOW YOU ALL OF THEM, BUT I CAN SHOW YOU A COUPLE OF THEM… The Dogbane is kinda pretty… Here are only three pictures of plants…

3. Some plant’s roots can go down 100 feet…those are called the “water seekers”. Other plant’s roots spread out all over the place…these are called the “water storers”. In the desert plants are almost all ground- hugging shrubs and short woody trees. Cacti have shallow root systems. They also have a fleshy stem which holds all of the water the shallow roots absorb. Cacti is the most common plant you will see in the desert.

4. Deserts can reach up to 122 degrees and drop ALL the way down to 32 degrees at night! The desert biome is the hottest biome in the world! Deserts get drizzles every so often, as you know, but when it really rains the desert has a flash flood! After a violent storm, the desert may not see rain for weeks or months…

5. In the desert, all months have an average temperature over 64 degrees. Dry desert climates are formed by high-pressure zone in which cold air descends. Then the descending air becomes warm but instead of releasing the rain, the heat from the ground evaporates the water before it can come down as rain.

6. IF A PLACE GETS LESS THAN 10 INCHES OF RAINFALL, IT’S CONSIDERED A DESERT! DESERTS COVER MORE THAN 1/5 TH OF THE EARTH’S SURFACE…

8. There are more than 1,468 different animal species in the desert!!! Now that’s a lot of animals! Some desert animals such as camels can go more than 2 weeks at a time with out water !

9.  A thorny devil is only in the desert…it could take about an hour to move a few meters…

10.  In the desert, there are many different types of plants and animals but they don’t need a lot of water. The desert gets less than 10 inches of rain every year.  The desert biome was interesting to learn about because there are tons of animals that live there and so many plants and they can survive on such little water.
