INSPIRING CREATIVE AND INNOVATIVE MINDS MIXED METHOD DESIGNS -A procedure for collecting, analysing and mixing both quantitative and qualitative research and methods in a single study to understand a research problem (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2007) -The combination will provides a better understanding -Sound knowledge on both approaches, quantitative and qualitative -Merging, integrating, linking, or embedding the two approaches

Reasons for Conducting Mixed Methods 1.Seek to build on the strengths of both quantitative and qualitative data 2.One type of research (qualitative or quantitative) is not enough to address the research problem or to answer the RQ 3.Situations where the qualitative approach has yet to be fully accepted

Several Questions To Be Asked 1.What priority or weight does the researcher give to the quantitative and qualitative data collection? 2.What is the sequence of collecting the quantitative and qualitative data? 3.How does the researcher actually analyse the data? 4.Where in the study does the researcher “mix” the data?

Types of Mixed-Method Designs 1.Triangulation Designs 2.Embedded Designs 3.Explanatory Designs 4.Exploratory Designs

Triangulation Design -Simultaneously collect both quantitative dan qualitative data, merge the data, and use the results to understand a research problem -One data-collection form supplies strengths to offset the weaknesses of the other form

The researcher gathers both quantitative and qualitative data, analyses both datasets separately, compare the results from the analysis of both datasets, and makes an interpretation whether it support of contradict

The Embedded Design -The researcher collects quantitative and qualitative data simultaneously -One form of data play a supportive role to the other form of data – augment or support the primary form of data

Priority is given to the major form of data collection, the data is collected simultaneously, but uses the secondary to augment or provide additional sources of information not provided by the primary source of data

Explanatory Design -Also called as two-phase model -Usually quantitative data will be collected first followed by qualitative data -The idea is to help explain or elaborate the quantitative results -The issue is that the researcher need to determine what aspect of the results to use in the follow-up – outlier, extreme cases, hypothesis that the researcher failed to reject

Priority is given to the quantitative data collection and analysis and the qualitative data is used to refine the results from the quantitative data

Explanatory study (Zainudin, 2006): Chapter 1Introduction Chapter 2The Development Of Initial Teacher Training In Malaysia Chapter 3Supervision in Initial Teacher Training Chapter 4Research Methodology Chapter 5Presentation and Analysis of Data Chapter 6Interpretation and Discussion of Results

Exploratory Design -The researcher gathers qualitative data first to explore a phenomenon and collecting quantitative data to explain the relationships found in the qualitative data -Usually the design is used to explore a phenomenon, identify themes, design an instrument, and subsequently test it

The researcher emphasises the qualitative data followed by quantitative data to explain the initial qualitative findings

Key Characteristics of Mixed Method 1.Rationale for the design 2.Quantitative and qualitative forms of data 3.Priority 4.Sequence 5.Data analysis matched to a design 6.Diagram of the procedures

Thank you very much for your attention and happy venturing on a qualitative study…
