2 Words to Know: In some Parliamentary forms of government, are two different people performing two very different duties. 1. Head of government : The Head of Government is responsible for running the government of a country with the approval of his or her cabinet. 2. Head of state: The Head of State has more ceremonial duties and holds no real power.

3 Words to Know: 3. Constitutional Monarchy: is a form of government in which a king or queen acts as Head of State. The ability to make and pass legislation resides with an elected Parliament, not with the Monarch. 4. Republic - form of government in which power is explicitly vested in the people, who in turn exercise their power through elected representatives.

6 Executive Prime Minister is head of government President appoints Prime Minister, who is the leader of the majority party in Parliament, the legislative branch President of India is chief of state or ceremonial leader

7 Rights of Citizens Right to vote for everyone over 18 Freedom of speech, assembly, and religion.

10 Communist government- all power is held in one central government Chinese Communist Party (CCP) claim to represent the people of China CCP holds the power and makes all government decisions Highest appointed leader is the president but is ceremonial- not chosen by the citizens Head of government is the premier who leads the State Council, which holds the executive power

11 Chinese Rights The CCP determines who are the candidates that run for office. Anyone can vote if they are 18. However, this is useless since the actions of the citizens are determined by the government. Citizens can only vote for the candidates of the CCP which is essentially the ruling class (oligarchic)

12 Personal Freedoms Government denies freedoms of speech, worship, and even safety from physical harm. Do you know of an incident where the Chinese government denied freedom of speech to the Chinese?

14 China’s official name is The People’s Republic of China. Based on our earlier definition of a republic and your knowledge now of China’s system of government, why is this name inaccurate?
