MATTING

REMEMBER… Matt Board is expensive. Measure twice, cut once. Lay your matt board on something clean… on newsprint for example, NOT the floor! When cutting matt board, cut economically so that you leave the largest amount of board for another person to use. Clean up your scraps Make sure the cutting blade is sharp

CUTTING YOUR BOARDS Cut Matt Board to the size you need, e.g., 13.5” x 17.5” Cut a backing board the same size as the matt board Mark the board where you want to cut it. Using the Paper Cutter, line up your paper/board along the left edge so that your paper is square. Always cut from the RIGHT TO THE LEFT Clean up scraps!

Putting Geometry to work…. What is the shape? What is the height? What is the width? MATTING A DRAWING These directions are for drawings/prints where no area a round the print will be shown. A B

This is the watercolor that we are going to mat.

1.Using a ruler, measure your image to determine how much of the drawing you want to show in the mat window when finished. NOTE: For this class, you cannot show the entire print. The mat must overlap the print at least 1”. 10” 16” 20”

1.Using a ruler, measure your image to determine how much of the drawing you want to show when finished matting. 2.This is the image that will show in the matted print 10” 16” 20”

2.This is the image that will show in the matted print 3.Decide how much mat you want on each side. Remember the bottom must be weighted, i.e., ½” to 1” wider 2” 2.5”

3.Decide how much mat you want on each side. Remember the bottom must be weighted, i.e., ½” to 1” wider 4.Calculate the size of mat that you need. H = 16” + 2” +2.5” = 20.5” W = 10” + 2” + 2” = 14” 2” 2.5” 2” 2.5” 16” 10” 2”

4.Calculate the side of mat that you need. H = 16” + 2” +2.5” = 20.5” W = 10” + 2” + 2” = 14” 5.Cut 2 mat boards 14” x 20.5” 2” 2.5” 2” 2.5” 16” 10” 2”

Logan Matt Cutter Loosen the two knobs, set the Matt Guide to 3” for cutting the top and the sides and tighten the two knobs. Place the Matt board, good side down on the cutter. BE SURE YOU ARE SQUARE! ALWAYS HAVE A PIECE OF BOARD UNDER THE CUTTER. On the back of the matt, lightly mark the length of the top and sides. Set Guide to 3.5” and repeat for the bottom Line up the white mark on the cutter with the line on the back of the matt. Push down on the blade. Move the cutter FROM RIGHT TO LEFT until the white mark is even with the light mark on the other side of the matt. Reset the Guide to 3” and cut the top and sides.

5.Cut 2 mat boards 14” x 20.5”. The bottom mat should be white. The top mat maybe white or may be colored. 6.On the back of the top mat, using the Logan Mat Cutter, pencil the 2” and 2.5” sides and top of the mat. 20.5” 14” 2” 2.5”

5.On the back of the top mat, using the Logan Mat Cutter, pencil the 2” and 2.5” sides and top of the mat. 6.Using the Logan Mat Cutter, carefully cut the mat. THE INNER PIECE OF THE MAT SHOULD FALL OUT. DO NOT PUSH IT. 20.5” 14” 2” 2.5”

8.On a clean surface, lay the cut mat and the back mat good side down. Note: the top of the top mat is placed next to the bottom mat. 9.Cut a piece of linen tape the length of the short side of the mats. Wet it at the sink and place it on the seam where the two mats meet, creating a hinge. Bottom of to mat

7.Using the Logan Mat Cutter, carefully cut the mat. THE INNER PIECE OF THE MAT SHOULD FALL OUT. DO NOT PUSH IT. 8.On a clean surface, lay the cut mat and the back mat good side down. Note: the top of the top mat is placed next to the bottom mat. Bottom of to mat

8.On a clean surface, lay the cut mat and the back mat good side down. Note: the top of the top mat is placed next to the bottom mat. 9.When the tape has dried, turn the top mat over the bottom mat.

10.When the tape has dried, turn the top mat over the bottom mat. 11.Place the print on the bottom mat. If necessary, cut the edges of the print so that it fits under the top mat. Cut no more than 1” away from the edges of the bottom mat. Bottom of to mat

11.Place the print on the bottom mat. If necessary, cut the edges of the print so that it fits under the top mat. Cut no more than 1” away from the edges of the bottom mat. 12.Use clear tabs to attach the art work to the bottom mat. The clear part of the tabs should not show in the mat window. Bottom of to mat

10” 16” 12.Use clear tabs to attach the art work to the bottom mat. The clear part of the tabs should not show in the mat window. 13.Sign the art work and then frame it. Michael Winkels 1/10 Spring Flowers
