2 Facts about the World cup!!! Approximately 53 countries want to take part in the world cup but only 32 of them are selected. Brazil have won the world cup 5 times in: 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002. Italy have won the world cup 4 times in: 1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006. England has won it once in: 1966.

3 When did the world cup begin? The world cup was first held in Uruguay. The world cup was first held in 1930. The World Cup was originally planned to take place again in 1942 due to World War 2. In June 1939 Brazil also applied to host the tournament

4 Who invented the world cup? The world cup was put together by FIFA president Jules Rimet. The world cup trophy went missing in 1966 when England had won the world cup. An owner and his dog (Pickles) was on a walk and the dog suddenly found a weird looking shape wrapped inside newspapers. So they took it to the police station and the police unwrapped the newspaper to find the world cup. Pickles the dog was named a hero and was very important to the world. Unfortunately, he died a year later after he had found the world cup trophy.

5 England's most successful world cup! England's most successful world cup was in 1966. The finest hour in English soccer history came at Wembley Stadium on 31 st July 1966, when England, led by Bobby Moore, beat West Germany in a thrilling game to lift the Jules Rimet trophy, better known as the world cup! England beat the Germans 4-2 in the final. It took place in London. England was the host nation when they won the world cup in 1966.

6 The name Brazil comes from a tree named Brazilwood. It is called Brazil in Portuguese, the official language spoken in Brazil. Brazil is the only country in South America that speaks Portuguese. Portugal claimed the land of Brazil in the year 1500. Independence was declared in 1822. Brazil is the 5th largest country in the world by both land area and population. The population in 2012 was around 194 million people. The capital city is Brasilia, while the largest city is Sao Paulo. Other major cities include Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Fortaleza.
