OBJECTIVE:  Students will be able to analyze and trace a story’s time and sequence by taking Cornell notes.

Vocabulary Practice: (preview pg. 5)  Work on listening!  Then, Quickwrite: (7 minutes) Think of a time when you or someone you know felt almost paralyzed by fear. Where were you (or the other person, and what happened?)

Quickwrite – page 4 (sample) About five years ago, my friend and I decided to go on a late walk over the Brooklyn Bridge. Even though it was dangerous since it was late at night and the area was desolate, we decided to go anyhow. For those who don’t know, the bridge crosses over a body of water similar to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. As we walked across, we stopped for pictures-just like a typical tourist- and it was at that precise moment I noticed that the bridge shakes a little bit when you stand still. That was the turning point. I couldn’t get past the notion that the bridge was shaking. The next thing I knew, I was paralyzed by fear and got down on all four, hands and feet. Not only did I NOT finish the late night stroll across the bridge, but I ended up crawling back to where we started.

Begin Exposition: 1) Setting 2) Background 3) Characters *focus: Cause and Effect

Cause and Effect tree map  Cause: what makes something happen  Effect: is the result; what happens Example: A plastic bag is blown out the car window because the window was rolled down.

Cornell Notes: “Contents of the Dead Man’s Pocket” 6. Left: Imagine this as a movie. Is the pace slow or fast? How does it build suspense? 7. Left: What does the apartment represent to Tom? 8. TAKE OUT CAUSE AND EFFECT
