LEARNING GOALS Understand how to solve physics problems Understand laws of motion and how to solve motion problems Understand force-related concepts and how to solve force-related problems Be able to see how physics concepts will relate to topics in your major and your future 2

WORKLOAD Homework (weekly, usually due Fridays, posted on Moodle) o By end of class (nothing late accepted under any circumstances – can submit early) – a few minutes grace period after class if need be o Rules (or deduction): Neat, clearly presented and annotated Show/keep units in all of your calculations Box, circle, or double underline your FINAL answer(s) Should expect ~2 hours outside of class for every hour in the classroom 3

WORKLOAD Exams (3 mid-term) and 1 final Quizzes Team physics project (teams) Labs o Follow instructions of your lab instructor 4

ORGANIZATION – create a method Chapter & appendix handouts Notes from whiteboard/chalkboard Other handouts related to topic o Graphs, figures o Notes o Class examples o Missed class? Must email me before next class meeting to see if any handouts to get or you can get copy from classmate HW and solutions Labs 3-ring binders recommended (and graph paper notes) 5

Extra Credit? No extra credit assignments or other work are planned for this course, other than incidental ones that might be part of a lab or other assignment. 6

MISCELLANEOUS Special needs? See Center for Academic Success o Accommodations memos expire each semester Cell phones off (other than as “clicker”) or you’ll be checking your phones at the door o No cell phones used as calculators Corequisite: MAT 1311 See me for help (GRE 129)! But don’t skip class and expect much help… 7

WEATHER AND CLASS CANCELLATION If Vermont Tech closes the Randolph Campus for weather, our class will be cancelled (if campus closes before class occurs) o HW due next time you see me; a scheduled quiz would be bumped one class meeting If weather stops me from getting to campus, I make every effort to notify the Class Cancellation hotline by 6 AM (and send class an e-mail) o Never cancelled in 17 years o Snow vs. ice (and off road being eaten by wolves) Bad weather and you o I respect your choice to be safe o Homework due vs. exam date vs. quizzes HW still due (can scan/email); quiz (would count as miss); exam (could be excused absence and made up) 8
