1 8 th Grade Trip Washington, D.C. May 5 - May 6, 2016 Welcome, Parents, Guardians, & Students!

2 Students arrive at 5:20 a.m. Buses depart 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 5 th Highlands Departure

3 Visit The Holocaust Memorial Museum/Newseum

4 Walking Tour of Monuments

5 White House Photo Stop

6 Sheraton College Park North

7 Thursday Evening Security Guards on Duty at 10:00 pm

8 Friday Morning Breakfast Buffet at the Sheraton 6:45 Breakfast/7:45 depart hotel

9 Arlington National Cemetery

10 Smithsonian Visits Choice of Museums American History Natural History Air & Space

11 Capitol Building Photo Stop

12 Friday – approximately 4:00 pm Board Buses to Return to Highlands

13 Friday Dinner Stop

14 Arrival Home Approximately 10:00 p.m. All students will be instructed to call from the bus ½ hour before actual arrival All buses will park on the Davis Avenue side of the building near the cafeteria Parents should park in the Tompkins Avenue lot (near the basketball courts) No students will be allowed to walk to the front of the building unescorted

16 Nurse Laurie O’Neill Medicines should be brought in pharmacy container, placed in a Ziploc bag and given to the nurse by Monday April 25 th.

17 Procedures Luggage will be dropped off by 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3. It will be inspected before we depart. Don’t overpack. One medium size suitcase or duffel One backpack (provided)

18 Cell Phone/iPod Expectations Will be collected at 10:00 p.m. on May 5 th, and returned at 6:00 a.m. on May 6 th. No student should be texting or making phone calls during site visits. Cell phones are not allowed into some sites.

19 Hotel Room Expectations Four students to a room Only boys in boys rooms – at all times Only girls in girls rooms – at all times Quiet time from 10:00 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. No internet/phone communication with others

20 Consideration for others We are a large group – we need to be respectful of other hotel guests and site visitors Show respect at sites using appropriate voice levels, language and behavior Walk with a purpose

21 Safety precautions Buddy system Chaperone groups Follow directions and pay attention to meeting time and locations

22 Punctuality Lateness can have serious consequences….. Everyone can be impacted by one late student Two students should shower at night, and 2 in the a.m.

23 Packing list Tee-shirts and pants Windproof/waterproof jacket Sleepwear Undergarments/socks Sneakers Hat Camera Batteries Cell phone and charger Toiletries Sunscreen Sunglasses

24 What to wear We will be WALKING A-LOT! Wear comfortable and school-appropriate clothing. Bring weather-appropriate gear. Layered clothing

25 Do Not Bring Flip flops or sandals “Short” shorts Laptops, I-pads or gaming devices Valuables

26 FYI Provided 5 meals Backpack, lanyard, luggage tags 2 tee shirts per student Some snacks and water will be provided Bring Breakfast on Thursday morning Spending money for souvenirs Additional snacks and water bottle (that can be filled at water fountains)

28 Snack/Water Donations Any brand of bottled water Individually-wrapped snacks such as cereal/granola bars, chips, cookies, etc.
