1 INGLÊS DE NEGÓCIOS I SCHOOL YEAR 2014-2015 FALL SEMESTER Lesson no. 1

3 COURSE GOALS  Understand the main ideas of complex speech on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions.  Read with a large degree of independence, adapting style and speed of reading to different texts and purposes.  Take part into discussion of familiar topics, express personal opinions and exchange information on topics that are familiar.  Write straightforward connected text on topics, which are familiar, or of personal and professional interest.

5 METHODOLOGY  The programme will be based around the needs of the participants, developing language skills through discussion, role- plays, presentations, vocabulary development, language analysis, negotiation practice all in the context of the core functions of a marketing professional.

6 ASSESSMENT – ÉPOCA NORMAL  Avaliação contínua that will consist of an appropriate selection of task-based oral and written assessment and self-directed learning activities.  Classes are the ideal place for students to practice their English, therefore attendance is mandatory. Students must attend 80% of the classes.

7 CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT To guarantee a pass grade for the module, students must achieve the minimum score (9,5) on both the oral exam and the written test 1.Project 25% 2. Business Scenarios 15% 3. Written Frequência 35% 4. Oral Exam 25%

8 WRITTEN AND ORAL EXAMS  The written exam will be based on content covered throughout the semester. Students must obtain at least 9,5 to be able to do continuous assessment.  The oral exam will be held during the semester (December 12 th ). Students must obtain at least 9,5.

9 PROJECT  Students have 2 options for their final project:  Option A: Let’s Blog Project (15 students only)  Pairwork  Digital collaboration project with French students  No presentation in class  Written exam will be shorter  Option B: World’s most innovative companies  Groups of 4 students  Research on the world’s most innovative companies.  Written essay + oral defense in class

10 LET’S BLOG PROJECT  This is a digital collaboration project between university students from Portugal (Instituto Politécnico de Viseu and France (Université Paris 11, Faculté des Sciences, Orsay (http://www.u- psud.fr/en/index.html) Students will be participating in an international digital collaborative writing project in English.They will be able to communicate via web 2.0 tools and contribute to a blog which has been set up for this specific purpose. Together with university students in France, students will be writing posts and commenting on those written by other bloggers.http://www.u- psud.fr/en/index.html

11 WORLD’S MOST INNOVATIVE COMPANIES  This is a group project (up to 4 elements), where students will have to do some research on the world’s most innovative companies (http://www.forbes.com/innovative-companies/list/), published annually by Forbes and choose one of the companies listed. Then they will have to write an essay following specific guidelines given by the teacher.

12 BUSINESS SCENARIOS Students will be given a list of real-life scenarios which they have to discuss and come out with a collaborative solution that will be presented in class. This will allow to check students' ability to communicate and exchange ideas in English about a business topic. Dynamics and role plays will be created to stimulate students and help them overcome certain fears and inhibitions. This will be carried out in groups of up to 3 students.

13 EXAME ÉPOCA NORMAL If students have attended, at least, 80% of the classes taught and if they’ve failed or haven’t submitted to continuous assessment, they are permitted to resit in - “Exame emÉpoca Normal”. Working students are also eligible to resit. Moreover, students who got a score of 9,5 or more in any of the components, their mark will be saved for the following examination period and they will only have to take the component(s) in which they failed.
