Capstone Design Project (CDP) Civil Engineering Department First Semester 1431/1432 H 10/14/20091 King Saud University, Civil Engineering Department

Definition of Capstone Design Project (CDP) The capstone design project that is a continual project over two semesters (CE498 and CE499). It involves at least three disciplinary teams (structural Eng. Team, Geothecnical Eng. Team, Construction Management team, Environmental Eng. Team,,,,,,,) working as one team tackling different aspects of the civil engineering works. 10/14/20092 King Saud University, Civil Engineering Department

Definition of Capstone Design Project (CDP) The interaction and the exchange of data and information among the different student teams is an essential component for the CSP All work conducted during the semester must be compiled in a final report and orally presented to the examining committee. It is accredited to 2 units of CE 498, and 3 units of CE499. 10/14/20093 King Saud University, Civil Engineering Department

CE 498 – First Phase of CDP In CE498, the students are introduced to different lectures addressing the following topics: – knowledge of professional and ethical responsibilities, – public policies, – administration, – leadership, and – contemporary issues related to Civil Engineering practice. 10/14/20095 King Saud University, Civil Engineering Department

CE 498 – First Phase of CDP The different student teams conduct regular meetings with and without their supervisors to identify and discuses the following g,d – Project Description – Project objectives – data needed and method of data collection, – The real-life constraints (e.g. economy, environmental, global, and contemporary issues), 10/14/20096 King Saud University, Civil Engineering Department

CE 498 – First Phase of CDP – The generation of possible design alternatives considering client needs, – The selection of the preferred alternative, and – The preparation of a work plan for implementing and completing the project. All work conducted during the semester must be compiled in a final report and complemented with an oral presentation. 10/14/20097 King Saud University, Civil Engineering Department

CE 499 – Second Phase of CDP CE499 course is an implementation phase of the capstone design project. It includes: – utilizing design criteria, – parameters and constraints for the design alternatives to select the preferred option, and – design calculation and/or use of experimental tools (if required) to refine design. 10/14/20098 King Saud University, Civil Engineering Department

CE 499 – Second Phase of CDP The student should: – Design the preferred alternative based on calculations and/or experimental tools. (ABET outcomes c, e, k) – Evaluate the impact of the selected design on economical, environmental, and social issues. (ABET outcome h) – Evaluate sustainability, health and safety issues. (ABET outcome c) – Work effectively as a member of the project team. (ABET outcome d) – Present the project professionally by submitting necessary design reports and drawings as well as making an oral presentation. (ABET outcomes g, k). 10/14/20099 King Saud University, Civil Engineering Department

Student-Instructor Contact Hours and location Two times 50-minute meeting per week (CE498- Wednesday 2-4) Commercial and educational software are used, if applicable. 10/14/200910 King Saud University, Civil Engineering Department

Contribution of Course to Meeting the Professional Component Students recognize importance of applying acquired engineering knowledge to practical engineering problems Students identify, formulate and solve engineering problems. Students are able to evaluate and synthesize information and develop alternative solutions Students are able to function in multi-disciplinary teams Students improve their writing, communication and presentation skills. 10/14/200911 King Saud University, Civil Engineering Department
