Fall of Mycenaean Civilization 1100-800 B.C. The civilization disappeared and the Greek communities were scattered and isolated rural settlements. 800-700 B.C. Overseas trade Revived and the first colonies were established in Sicily and southern Italy.

Age of Colonization 700-550 B.C. The beginnings of organized governments, law codes and constitutions.

The Persian Empire 550-500 B.C. Persian Empire expands to dominate the Greeks of Asia Minor. Athens grew to prominence while Sparta was dominant in the Peloponnesus. 490-479 B.C. The Persians attacked the Greeks, but the Persians are unsuccessful in defeating Greece.

New Athens Empire 476-431 B.C. Athenians create an empire that is resented by other Greeks.

Unification in Greece 396-323 B.C. Athens, Sparta, and Thebes competed for leadership, all unsuccessfully. King Philip, from Macedon, rose to power in the North and eventually defeated Athens and Thebes. He unites all of the different Greek States, either by defeating them or by making alliances with them. King Philip is assassinated and Alexander the Great takes over for his father. Alexander invaded Persia and conquered the East as far as Northwest India before dying in Babylon.

Hellenistic Kingdoms 322-222 B.C. Alexander’s generals fought over his empire and eventually created the three Hellenistic kingdoms of Egypt, Syria, and Macedon. The Aetolian and Achaean leagues rose and Cleomenes led the Spartans to Revolution.

Rome Takes Over 146-30 B.C. Romans conquer Greece and Macedon. They complete the conquest of the Hellenistic world, converting it all to Roman provinces.
