1 When the Soviet Union liberated Auschwitz-Birkenau on January 27, 1945, there were 43,000 pairs of shoes in the camp. The photo below shows the shoes found in a warehouse. Auschwitz Museum Exhibits Tiny shoes for a little girl. Doris Mathes. Born June 14, 1942. Gassed Jan. 17, 1944, at Auschwitz. The Holocaust was the genocide of approximately six million European and millions of others during World War II, a programme of systematic state-sponsored murder by Nazi Germany, led by Adolf Hitler, throughout Nazi-occupied territory. Of the nine million Jews who had resided in Europe before the Holocaust, approximately two-thirds perished. Schindler's List is a 1993 American film about Oskar Schindler, a German businessman who saved the lives of more than a thousand mostly Polish-Jewish refugees during the Holocaust by employing them in his factories. We do not know what has happened to her until much later. The Nazis are ordered to dig up all the Jewish corpses they have buried to incinerate the evidence of the slaughter of the Cracow ghetto. As the decomposing corpses are trundled in wagons to the fires Oscar Schindler catch a glimpse of a red-tinted rag of a corpse. The Little Girl in The Red Coat Perhaps the most moving image in Steven Spielberg's epic Schindler's List is the little girl in the red coat, one of only four colour images in the three-hour black and white film. Our attention is drawn to her, overlooked by the Nazi troops, who wanders alone amid the horror and panic. She is wearing a red coat which draws the viewer to her even when she is but one of a hundred people in a wide shot.

2 Analysis of the film clip and poster Title a Page in your sketchbook: ‘Schindler’s List Analysis.’ Then stick in the poster picture from this sheet. Answer the following questions in as much detail as you can in FULL sentences: 1.Describe the scene you have just seen from ‘Schindler’s list.’ What happens in the scene? What characters are in the scene? 2.Why do you think the little girl is in red when everything else in the film is black and white? 3.Who is the little girl? Give a reason for your answer. 4.How does the film make you feel? Say how it does this? Does it set quite a sad mood? How do you feel about the little girl? If you are on her side- how does the film make you decide this? 5.What does the Film Poster tell you about the film? What do you expect from the film based on this poster? Describe the image on the poster in your answer. Think about the colours and the image.
