WVAGP Annual Meeting May, 2016 Bluefield Sanitary Board: Building a Better GIS

Agenda Introductions Data Collection Office Processes Field Operations CCTV & Televised Mains Tap Sheets Summary

Established in 1990 to service and repair construction lasers Company has grown to include over 50 employees working at 6 retail locations Trimble Authorized Dealer & Distribution Partner and Authorized Service Center

Intro Who – Bluefield Sanitary Board, Steve Duffy, Engineering Manager Why - SSES Sanitary Sewer Evaluation Study completed by Thrasher Engineering impetus for overhauling GIS CAD converted to GIS LGIM Setup of smoke test dataset in GIS CCTV processor module implemented and video data linked What – After updating GIS BSB sought to improve the quality of the GIS data with high accuracy positions and increase access throughout the organization with cloud hosted technologies for both field users and upper management.

Data Collection - Criteria Utilize existing mobile devices (Android) tablet/phones. Simple easy to use interface Desire for sub-meter to sub-foot accurate data locations. Access to free WVDOT VRS network and reasonable coverage of cellular network in the BSB territory. Ability to both collect new features and update existing datasets. Ability to link data directly to the Esri LGIM Prefer to wirelessly sync data.

Hardware & Software Android tablet Trimble TerraFlex Advanced Subscription Update as well as collect new data Access VRS for real-time sub-foot accuracies in the field. Trimble TerraFlex for ArcGIS Plug-In Forms for data collection generated from Esri LGIM schema to include domains and sub-types. Need to check-out existing assets directly from ArcGIS as a task to be updated Add GNSS Metadata fields to Geodatabase during project setup. Trimble R2 – Sub-foot GNSS Receiver Increased accuracy with limited budget (over 7x) Can share GNSS receiver with different users/different mobile devices.

▪ Trimble VRS Network – Sub-meter accuracy – Full convergence in less than 5 minutes – Delivered over IP network (cellular) – Using data plan on tablet or hotspot via phone. – Access in WV is FREEFREE WV DOT Real Time Network

What is Trimble TerraFlex A flexible, cloud-based solution for robust field data collection enabling fast, efficient, attribute rich, geo-located data collection with an intuitive digital forms interface from a wide variety of mobile GPS ready devices

Useable On A Wide Variety of Devices Consistent Regardless of Device Automatically Syncs Field with Office

TerraFlex Editions TerraFlex Basic Create forms Collect data Digitize geometries User management Project management Export data Cross-platform support Automatic office-field syncing  TerraFlex Advanced –TerraFlex Basic + –Import data from shapefile –Create template from shapefile schema –Create tasks –Push data to field –Update attributes in the field –Edit data in office

Applications Bluetooth NMEA Location Services

New Features TerraFlex Plugin for Esri ArcMap: Include standalone geodatabase tables in a project and optionally transfer geometry back to fields in the table Create auto-fields from the add-in Upload features without having to directly assign them to a task Set accuracy thresholds

TerraFlex / Esri Workflow 1.Create Project 2.Set up Metadata Fields 3.Publish Project 4.Assign Users 5.Select Features 6.Create Task 7.TerraFlex Portal – add VRS configuration 8.Collect/Update Data 9.Check-in New/Updated data

How This Benefits You Productivity: Pause and collect for more efficient field data collection Collect with more field device configurations Edit more geometry types, rather than having to recapture an entire line or area geometry from scratch Integrity: Keeping your TerraFlex templates tightly synced with your ArcMap schemas

How This Benefits You Flexibility Option to use Esri geodatabase tables. Tables may be the method data is synced with other external databases that do not readily accept spatial references Add TerraFlex auto-fields on the fly. Uneditable meta-data capture including: Collected by Device type Device ID Correction status – method of GNSS correction Correction source – SBAS, VRS, etc. Creation date and time Update date and time Estimated accuracy Geometry capture type – GNSS or digitized PDOP/HDOP – traditional GNSS accuracy parameters

Office Processes CCTV processing Tap Sheet import

CCTV & Televised Mains CCTV camera & inspection activities being performed throughout the system Using Esri’s CCTV Processor to ingest & process incoming data Photos stored as Feature Attachments Goals: Share CCTV data via ArcGIS Online Export photos from attachment tables Create local and web-accessible links to photo video files

Exporting Feature Attachments… http://support.esri.com/ES/knowledgebase/techarticles/detail/41763

Feature Attachment Export - ArcToolbox

Feature Attachment Export - Script Open in NP++

Feature Attachment Export – ArcGIS Online

Tap Sheets Historic system documents Valuable information, often not reflected in the GIS data Goal: make available through GIS

Tap Sheets – Document Organization Documents organized by Street & Block Number

Tap Sheets – Block Points ‘Block Points’ created from available addressing information

Tap Sheets – Database Schema

Tap Sheets- Script Open in NP++

Tap Sheets- Collector for ArcGIS

Field Operations Additional ArcGIS Online-only workflows have been implemented Sanitary & Stormwater Action Item Inventory Sanitary Manhole Inspections Map Change Request

Utilize existing best practices; standard data models & capture GPS metadata. Review fit of field requirements for field environments. GPS and GIS don’t work alone consider end value of data first. The best solution is often not achievable with one product but an integration of hardware and software from various vendors. Web hosted solutions bring greater access to GIS data at a price many organizations can afford. Summary
