Overview Why space is important Current drivers Impact of teaching spaces Impact on support services space Space planning tools and models Future of the HE Estates

Why Space is Important Long standing recognition of the relationship between human behaviour and the physical environment (Scott-Webber 2004) Potential of virtual learning environments students begin to think critically about on campus experiences – value judgements (Aspden & Thorpe 2003) Students need to feel their on campus experiences are making a valuable and identifiable contribution to the learning experience

Current Drivers Quality of physical facilities as a marketing asset Future changes in pedagogic approach – group size, frequency, types of space, technology Growth in demand for "blended" learning spaces Greater flexibility of space to drive up utilisation and reduce costs by reducing demand for space Development of –Central Hubs –Lifestyle Facilities –Learning Spaces

Impact on Support Services Catering – –expression of University values –opportunities for blended learning environments wireless group study spaces Student Living –importance of social space – CUBO research 2008 –internet access –ease of access to teaching locations http://www.cubo.org.uk/publications/

Teaching Space Predictive Model The project took as its basis the Space Need Indicator Framework developed by Kilner Planning. This is a tool developed to enable universities to gain an enhanced understanding of; the capacity of their estate; discrepancies between the space available and the type of space needed and the effect of changes in numbers of staff, students and in methods of academic delivery on space needs.

Teaching Space Predictive Model Information was taken from the timetabling software database Applied certain variables, the model calculated how many rooms of a certain size were required. The variables used were: –the number of standard teaching hours in a week, –the optimum capacity and frequency the University wished to achieve –the standard size (square metre) per workplace dependent on the type of teaching activity. By changing the variables it was possible to see how much space was being used, compared to how much space would be required for the University to provide sufficient space to timetable within the boundaries, as laid out in the University Timetabling Principles

Measuring Performance Efficiency – density, cost of occupation and cost of change Effectiveness – attracting/retaining staff, supporting interaction, accommodation change AND Expression – key messages to staff, customers and stakeholders

Future of HE Estate 1.Greater blurring of boundaries to space types 2.Services seen as supporting and being part of the learning experience 3.Even greater importance on delivering a well maintained estate 4.Need for high levels of space data integrity to inform space planning and defining future demand 5.Impact on the community 6.Impact on the planet
