3 Solaris Web Start 3.0 Installation Software software application powered by Java technology uses graphical user interface GUI guides through the installation Boot the system from the Solaris 9 Installation CD- ROM to invoke the Solaris Web Start program

4 Custom JumpStart Installation Provides a hands-off installation across the network and is based on a central-configured server. Installs Solaris OE on a system by referencing a user- defined profile Incorporates shell scripts (pre-installation & post- installation tasks)

5 Solaris Web Start Flash Installation Software Enables to install many systems based on a configuration that is installed on a master server Create a flash archive after installing and configuring a master server Installation is faster when compared to a standard installation

6 Standard Upgrade to the Solaris OE A standard upgrade merges the new version of the Solaris OE with the existing files on the system’s disk Standard upgrade methods Solaris suninstall program Solaris Web Start software Custom JumpStart procedure Standard upgrade saves many of the modifications that were made to the previous version of OE

7 Solaris Live Upgrade Software Upgrades a duplicate boot environment while the active boot environment is still running Create a duplicate boot environment, upgrade or install a Solaris Web Start Flash archive on the inactive boot environment When ready activate the inactive boot environment, during the next reboot, the inactive boot environment becomes the active boot environment Requires enough available disk space

8 Hardware Requirements A System based on an UltraSPARC processor 64 Mbytes of memory 2.3 Gbytes of diskspace Keyboard and Monitor Access to CD-ROM drive or an installation server

9 Software Components of the Solaris OE Solaris OE software is organized into three components Software packages Software clusters Software groups

12 Solaris OE Software Groups Core End User System Support Developer System Support Entire Distribution Entire Distribution plus Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM)

13 Core Software Group (SUNWCreq) Contains the minimum software required to boot and run the Solaris OE Includes a minimum of networking software (Telnet, FTP, NFS, NIS clients & DNS) Includes the drivers required for CDE but not the CDE software Online manual pages are not included

14 End User System Support Software Group (SUNWCuser) Contains core software group and also contains the recommended software for an end user plus the CDE

15 Developer System Support Software Group (SUNWCprog) Contains the End User System support software group It also contains the libraries, the include files, the online manual pages and the programming tools for developing software

16 Entire Distribution Software Group (SUNWCall) Contains the Developer System Support software group Contains additional software needed for servers

17 Entire Distribution Plus OEM Software Group (SUNWCXall) Contains the entire Solaris OE software release Contains additional hardware support for OEMs Recommended when installing Solaris OE on non-Sun servers that use a UltraSPARC processors

18 To view the name of the cluster configurations “# grep METACLUSTER /var/sadm/system/admin/.clustertoc” To determine which cluster configuration has been installed on the system “# cat /var/sadm/system/admin/CLUSTER”

19 Installing the Solaris 9 OE from a CD-ROM The suninstall program uses Tab Window Manager (TWM) TWM provides the following features: Title bars Shaped Windows Several forms of icon management User-defined macro functions A click-to-type and pointer-driven focus User-specified key and pointer button bindings

20 Pre-Installation Information General guidelines while planning for installation Allocate additional disk space for each language that you install Allocate additional space in the /var file system if you plan to have system support for printing or mail Allocate double the amount of physical memory in the /var file system if you plan to use the crash dump feature “savecore” on your system

21 Allocate additional space in the /export file system if you plan to provide a home directory file system for users Allocate space for the Solaris software group you want to install Allocate an additional 30% more disk space for each file system that you create, and create a minimum number of file systems. Allocate additional disk space for additional software or third-party software

22 Information required before installation Hostname - unique & usually short name. (“uname-n” to fine the host name on an existing system) Host IP Address - (“ifconfig command to display the current IP address”) Name Service type - any one name service domains such as LDAP, NIS, NIS+, DNS or none Subnet mask - subnet mask is stored in the /etc/netmasks file

23 Geographic location and time zone “root” password Language
