Identify the proper Hardware Methods for installing Linux Determine a purpose for the Linux Machine Linux File Systems Linux Boot Managers Configuring Network Options COMPONENTS
IDENTIFY THE PROPER HARDWARE A Pentium-class PC (at least 200 MHz for text mode; 400 MHz for GUI). Bootable CD-ROM drive. At least 64MB of RAM (for text mode) or 128MB of RAM (for GUI mode). At least 510MB of free hard disk space for a Minimum custom install. At least 2.1GB of hard disk space for a personal desktop install. At least 2.6GB of free space for a workstation install. At least 920MB for a server install. A custom Everything install requires at least 5.8GB of disk space. Dedicate an entire hard disk to Linux or have a preconfigured Linux partition.
METHODS FOR INSTALLING LINUX Text Based Minimal Installation Full Installation Graphical User Interface (GUI) Based Minimal Installation Full Installation HTTP FTP NFS image Hard disk
DETERMINE A PURPOSE FOR THE LINUX MACHINE As a Print Server (CUPS) As a File Server (SAMBA) As a Mail Server (SENDMAIL, POSTFIX) As an FTP Server (VSFTPD, PROFTPD, PURE-FTPD) As a Web Server (APACHE, LIGHTTPD) As a News Server As Boot Servers: DHCP and NIS As a Database Server (MYSQL, POSTGRESQL, SQLITE) Making Servers Public with DNS (NAMED)
LINUX PARTITIONS & FILE SYSTEMS Linux native (ext2 or preferably ext3) Software RAID Linux swap (swap) Physical volume (LVM) Windows FAT (vfat). File Systems /boot /usr /var /home /tmp /etc Partitions
Linux Boot Managers Boot Loader A boot loader lets you choose when and how to boot the bootable operating systems installed on your computer's hard disks. GRUB (GRand Unified Boot loader ) boot loader LILO (LInux LOader) boot loader Types
CONFIGURING NETWORK OPTIONS STATIC or DHCP IP address Netmask Host name Default gateway DNS servers
