Marmelo Mill

 The sister bridge to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. This was designed by the same architect who built the Golden Gate Bridge. Sight Seeing in Lisbon

 Marques Dé Pombal is a landmark that represents the center of Portugal.  Its name is a reference to Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, 1st Marques of Pombal, 1st Count of Oeiras, the mighty prime-minister who ruled Portugal from 1750 to 1777. In the middle of the roundabout there is a large column dedicated to him, built between 1917 and 1934 and created by Adães Bermudes, António Couto and Francisco Santos.  A bronze statue of the Marques is on the top, with a lion - symbol of power - by his side. The Marques is shown looking towards the Baixa Pombalina, the area of Lisbon that was rebuilt under his direction after the disastrous 1755 Lisbon Earthquake. Marques de Pombal

The Mosteiro dos Jerónimos In Lisbon, Portugal  In 1496, King D. Manuel I asked the Holy Sé for permission to build a large monastery on the banks of the river Tagus. The works started in 1501 and almost a century later everything was done. D. Manuel I and his descendants were buried in marble tombs located in the bottom of the chapel.

 King Manuel I built it in 1502 on the site of a hermitage, founded by Prince Harry the Navigator, where Vasco da Gama and his crew spent their last night in Portugal before leaving for India. It was built to commemorate Vasco da Gama’s voyage and to give back to the Virgin Mary for its success. Jeronimos Monastery

 This is where Vasco da Gama is buried. Inside Monastery

Gabby: This was my favorite part of Lisbon, the Castelo de São Jorge. The site was occupied by the Romans, Visigoths and Moors before being transformed into the Royal Palace in the 14th century. Perched above the enticing tangle of streets in Alfama, São Jorge Castle has 11 towers and a dry moat.

 It represents a three-sailed ship ready to depart, with sculptures of important historical figures such as King Manuel I carrying an armillary sphere, poet Camões holding verses from The Lusiads, Vasco da Gama, Magellan, Cabral, and several other notable Portuguese explorers, crusaders, monks, cartographers, and cosmographers, following Prince Henry the Navigator at the prow holding a small vessel. Monument of Discoveries
