Agenda IFR Planning Standards per TC 1-212 Preflight Departure Enroute Arrival Brief back

IFR Planning 1.TASK 1002 – PLAN AN IFR FLIGHT - STANDARDS: 1.Appropriate common standards plus 2.Determine if the aircrew and aircraft are capable of completing the mission 3.Determine if flight can be performed per AR 95-1 and applicable FARs/host nation regs 4.Determine departure, en route, and destination procedures 5.Select routes and altitudes that avoid hazardous weather conditions, exceed aircraft limitations, and conform to IFR cruising altitudes per DOD Flip. 6.If off-airway, determine course heading +/- 5 degrees 7.Select an approach that is compatible with the weather, approach facilities, and aircraft equipment; and determine if an alternate airfield is required 8.Determine distance +/- 1 NM, True Airspeed +/- 3 Knots, Ground Speed +/- 5 Knots, and ETE +/- 3 minutes for each leg of flight 9.Determine the fuel required per AR 95-1 and FM 1-240, +/- 100lbs 10.Complete and file the flight plan per AR 95-1 and the DOD FLIP 11.Perform Mission Risk assessment per unit SOP

IFR Planning Standards 1.Determine if the aircrew and aircraft are capable of completing the mission Aviator flying the aircraft on takeoff must have 50 hours of actual weather time otherwise weather must be 100 ¼ (1200RVR or metric equivalent) to depart IFR {AR 95-1 Para 5-3b} Aircraft must meet all equipment requirements per AR 95-1 Table 5-2 and not be restricted from IMC flight {AR 95-1 Para 5-4b(1)}

IFR Planning Standards 2. Select route(s) and altitudes that avoid hazardous weather conditions, do not exceed aircraft or equipment limitations, and conform to IFR cruising altitudes per DOD FLIP. If off- airway, determine the course(s) +/- 5 degrees IFR cruising altitudes outside controlled airspace {IFR ELA Legend} - Magnetic courses 0° to 179° - ODD thousands - Magnetic courses 180° to 359° - EVEN thousands

IFR Planning Standards 3. Select an approach that is compatible with the weather approach facilities, and aircraft equipment; and determine if an alternate airfield is required Weather Destination weather must be forecast to be equal or greater then the approach minimums from ETA through 1 hour after ETA {AR 95-1 Para 5-2(4)} Category A visibility minimums may be reduced by 50% but not less then ¼ mile (Does not apply to Copter approaches) {AR 95-1 Para 5-2(5)}

IFR Planning Standards 3. Select an approach that is compatible with the weather approach facilities, and aircraft equipment; and determine if an alternate airfield is required Alternate Airfield Planning – {AR 95-1 Para 5-2e} Required when: - Radar is required - Navaids are unmonitored - Weather is less then 400-1 above the planning minimum (Predominant weather) - Alternate is not required if an approach can be made from the minimum altitudes for IFR operations to landing in VFR conditions

IFR Planning Standards Minimum Enroute Altitude 2000 MSL Minus Field Elevation - 244 MSL = 1756 Plus 500 feet (cloud clearance) + 500 = 2256 Round up to nearest 100 = 2300 Minimum altitude for IFR operations

IFR Planning Standards 3. Select an approach that is compatible with the weather approach facilities, and aircraft equipment; and determine if an alternate airfield is required Alternate Airfield Selection {AR 95-1 Para 5-2f} - Weather must be 400-1 above weather planning minimums at ETA through 1 hour after ETA (Worst weather) - ANA is not shown - Radar is not required - Navaids are monitored - Approach airport has surface B,C,D, or E airspace in effect - GPS is not required - Above requirements do not need to be met if an approach can be made from the minimum altitudes for IFR operations to landing in VFR conditions

IFR Planning Standards 4. Determine departure, en route, and destination procedures Departure - All aviators will comply with published nonstandard IFR take off minimums and departure procedures in DOD FLIP {AR 95-1 Para 5-3a} Enroute - During IMC, all instruments and communication equipment will be kept in the “On” position and available for use. {AR 95-1 Para 5-4a} - Communications – IFR reports and radio phraseology will conform to DOD FLIP {AR 95-1 Para 5-4c(1)} - Holding – an aviator may request to hold at any time (As long as fuel and alternate requirements can be met and the holding pattern is in accordance with DOD FLIP) {AR 95-1 Para 5-4d}

IFR Planning Standards 4. Determine departure, en route, and destination procedures Destination {AR 95-1 Para 5-5a-d} - Approved procedures published in DOD and NOS FLIPS will be flown. - When published landing visibility minimums require conversion between RVR and statute miles, the conversion table in DOD FLIP will be used - RVR is the controlling visibility factor when published and reported for a runway (Does not apply to a circling approach) - Dual VOR requirements to not apply to army aviators, however dual VOR approach minimums do apply

IFR Planning Standards 4. Determine departure, en route, and destination procedures Destination (cont) - Minimum weather to initiate the approach - Category 2 ILS approaches in IMC are authorized provided provisions in AR 95-1 Table 5-3 are met (The highest DH for the procedure must be used) - The published missed approach procedure must be flown proved fuel plus reserve can be met, unless you receive clearance from ATC to proceed to another airfield

IFR Planning Standards 4. Determine departure, en route, and destination procedures Destination (cont) - Landing / Descending below the published MDA or DH - Will not be conducted unless: - The approach threshold or approach lights or other markings, must be clearly visible to the pilot - The aircraft must be in a position to make a safe approach to the runway or landing area

IFR Planning Standards 5. Determine the fuel required per AR 95-1 and FM 1- 240, +/- 100 pounds Destination (cont) - (AR 95-1) At takeoff, the aircraft must have enough fuel to reach the destination and alternate (if required) plus 30 minutes at cruise - (FM 1-240 Appendix b) Total fuel for the flight required to include: - Warm-up and Taxi - Initial climb - Enroute cruise to destination and alternate including enroute delays - Fuel reserves for IFR flight

IFR Planning Standards 5. Determine the fuel required per AR 95-1 and FM 1- 240, +/- 100 pounds Destination (cont) REARA Time Fuel Fuel Remaining Run-Up 10 130 1739 Enroute 54 700 1609 Approach 8 104 909 Reserve 30 390 390 Alternate 32 415 805 1739

IFR Planning Standards 6. Complete and file a flight plan per AR 95-1 and DOD FLIP DOD FLIP -PER the GP Chapter 4 AR 95-1 Para 5-2d -Aircraft will not be flown unless a flight plan military (DD175 or 1801) or civilian (FAA form 7233-1) is filed

IFR Planning Standards 7. Perform mission risk assessment per unit SOP All flights are a risk assessment level of “Low” that are flown with an SP, IP, or IE at one set of the controls (1-212 th SOP Para 6-2g)

Brief Back What is the standard on computing fuel for an IFR flight? - Per AR 95-1 and DOD FLIP +/- 100 pounds What has the visibility precedence on an approach where RVR is reported and published, RVR or SM? - RVR Where can I find information about IFR reports and radio phraseology? - GP Chapters 2 and 5

Summary IFR Planning Standards per TC 1-212 Preflight Departure Enroute Arrival I only put 40% of the class to sleep

Questions??? Remember, there are no stupid questions, only stupid people
