Proposal to expand Childs Hill Primary School 21 April 2016

Aim of the Meeting 1Background to School Expansions Alison Dawes 2Outline information related to the school Dan Hawkins 3Opportunity to ask questions and share your views All

Childs Hill Primary School 1.5 form entry school – 45 Reception pupils are admitted each year Judged ‘Good’ by Ofsted in January 2016 The proposal:  To expand Childs Hill Primary School to become a permanent two-form entry school.  The school would transition from admitting 45 pupils in reception each year to admitting 60.

Proposal: School Expansion to Two Forms of Entry The first permanent cohort of 60 reception pupils would be admitted in 2016/17. The school would grow by 15 pupils each year for 7 years. The permanent two-form entry school would eventually cater for 420 pupils in 2022/23. 5 The Proposal – Why? Since 2002, the number of children born in the local area (Childs Hill, Golders Green and Garden Suburb wards) has increased by 23% (from 685 to 845), in line with Barnet’s average (24%) Brent Cross Regeneration Scheme 7682 residential units to be provided Within 1.5 miles of Childs Hill Primary School New homes attract new families into the area creating additional demand for Barnet school places.

Future Reception Demand If Childs Hill’s expansion is not delivered, the projections suggest that in the short term there will be insufficient spare capacity in the local area, with a shortfall of places emerging by 2020. 8 Factors to Consider Dan Hawkins

What are the benefits for Childs Hill? More places for children in the community Investment in the school building Significant additional funding due to increased numbers of pupils Additional opportunities for staff professional development Retention of high quality staff Increased capacity to develop leadership team Flexibility with larger year group teams

What are the challenges? Parental preference for size of school Ensuring that school ethos is unchanged Minimising impact on the outside spaces Timetabling Lunchtimes Development of communal spaces Managing the construction phase Access, traffic and parking Staffing

Project Cost and Value for Money  We are currently exploring the final costs for the project – early indications suggest it will be ~£350,000.  This project provides good value for money compared to similar permanent expansions in Barnet, and will improve the financial sustainability of the school in the longer term.  The costs will be met from the Council’s Basic Need Allocation, which is funding from the Department of Education

The Proposal - Next Steps Any expansion is subject to planning processes and approvals Need to develop design for the expanded premises – will involve school community Consultation with the local community – timetable: Stage ActivityDuration 1 Consultation with parents and the local community 6 weeks 2Statutory proposal on expansion published 1 day 3Statutory representation period 4 weeks 4 Decision taken on proposal to expand by the Local Authority Within 2 months of the end of the representation period
