3  Complications  Pressure ulcers  Constipation  Urinary tract infections (UTI)  Blood clots  Pneumonia  Contractures  Muscle atrophy

4  Trapeze: used to strengthen arm muscles  ROM: the movement of a joint to the greatest extent possible w/o causing pain.  Active ROM: done by the person  Passive ROM: someone moves the joint ▪ Performed with residents on bed rest, those who cannot walk, turn or transfer themselves.  Active-passive ROM: the person moves with some help.

5 Ambulation: the act of walking  First the resident dangles.  Use a gait belt if the person is weak or unsteady. (check facility policy, best to always use a gait belt and often required)  If the resident starts to fall do not prevent but ease them to the floor.  An incident report is completed after ALL falls!!!

8  Insure Safety- Stop exercise immediately if any pain occurs and notify the Charge nurse!  Position Supine  Gently support arm at elbow and wrist and wrist and hand  Gently support leg at knee and ankle and then ankle and foot

9  Flex elbow, bring arm over head x 3  Arm at right angle from body x 3  Flex elbow and move hand to shoulder x 3  Arm flat on bed, turn palm up & down x 3  Palm up, flex wrist towards shoulder x 3  Move hand side to side, thumb to little finger x 3  Help resident form a fist x 3  Touch thumb to each finger x 3  Spread fingers out then close x 3

10  Flex knee and raise leg x 3  Move leg away from center and then back x 3  Turn leg inward then outward x3  Move foot in clockwise then counter clockwise circles x 3  Curl toes down then straighten out x 3  Have resident move toes away from middle toe then back (flaring) x 3
