TIME TO PICK COURSES Pick Courses Through “Parent Connect”. (Lost Password: use 9 digit PEN # and reset) Follow the links from the Delview website: http://www.deltasd.bc.ca/dl Choose courses online: March 10-14 th

THE TEENAGE BRAIN Adolescence is a critical phase of brain development The brain is the last organ in the body to mature That due to brain plasticity in the teen years, IQ changes for 2/3 of adolescents Adolescents are guided primarily by emotions because their frontal lobes are not yet fully connected to other parts of the brain

Teen Adult Growth Dependency to Independency Disorganized to Organized Depressed to Positivity / Hope Anxiety to Courage Insecurity to Pride Good Communication Skills Healthy Habits Boundaries & Expectations = “I believe in you”

Independence Can my child do this? Are the parents and teachers working harder than the child to solve problems? Scenario: Child is struggling in math class

Organization What system of organization works for your child? (agenda, iphone app) Can they show you how they: –Track upcoming tests and assignment due dates –Set reminders –Plan for the day/week/weekend

Positivity & Hope How does your child view the world and their future? Where are they getting these ideas? How can we help in keeping it real and positive at the same time? Life’s not always fair, but hard work and decency tend to open doors; experience & training also help

Courage Courage hurts There is physical discomfort in hard work Can your child persevere through discomfort? (e.g. studying) How do we teach perseverance?

Pride / Accomplishment Pride comes after Courage Ask your child when they last experienced pride? (for a positive effort or deed) After they work hard, focus on pride Courage & Pride  “I can”

Current Worries “Suffering in Silence” –Telling staff about problems at school usually makes things better, not worse –It’s not ratting to report other kids’ hurtful behaviors “Cruel ≠ Cool” –Disrespect is not age-appropriate, not a phase –Encourage teens to use respectful language at school, home, community, & online

Worries (cont.) Substance Use & Partying –Drug & alcohol use; Frequent partying –Encourage pro-social activities (clubs, sports) Online Behavior –More cruel than kind postings –Encourage kids to speak in person to resolve problems or vent, not online

Electronic Devices – –Looking for connection the “easy” way – –Need connection in person – –Communication skills – –Emotional well-being Sleep Coming to school ready to learn: – –Rested – –Fed, especially protein & lunch packed

Communicating With School Staff emails are on Delview website Some teachers have links to their web page, post assignments there Some teachers put their marks on Parent Connect, other post in classroom Counsellors are a place where students can report or discuss issues confidentially (except in cases of harm to self/others)
