3. Advanced Higher Drama Unit Assessment Drama Skills This Unit will focus on learners developing their knowledge of methodologies, theatre practices and texts to progress their devising skills. Their knowledge and skills will be informed by the work of a key theatre practitioner. They will independently create a devised drama production. This will explore how meaning can be communicated to an audience through practical realisation of their own theatrical concepts. Learners will also evaluate the effectiveness of their concepts.

Advanced Higher Drama Skills – Outcome 1 and Assessment Standards Outcome 1 1 Apply a range of complex drama skills by: 1.1 Exploring ideas for a drama in response to a variety of methodologies, theatre practices and texts of one or more key practitioners 1.2 Developing ideas based on research informed by one or more key practitioners

Advanced Higher Drama Skills – Outcome 2 and Assessment Standards Outcome 2 2 Contribute creatively to the drama process by: 2.1 Planning, researching and devising drama informed by practices and methodologies of one or more theatre practitioners 2.2 Applying complex drama skills within a presentation 2.3 Evaluating their drama

6. Drama: Production Skills In this Unit, learners will focus on a study of a key theatre practitioner, and explore in depth the influences on and the theory and practice of their chosen practitioner. They will explore and analyse key productions that reflect their acting or directing or design methodologies through both research and practical experimentation. They will take on the role of the actor or director or designer in the exploration of a textual extract. A minimum of two practitioners should be studied, with each Unit exploring a different practitioner.

7. Advanced Higher Drama: Production Skills – Outcome 1 and Assessment Standards Outcome 1 1 Explore a range of complex production skills informed by theories and practices of one or more practitioners by: 1.1 Researching the theories and practice of one or more key practitioners 1.2 Developing complex production skills, informed by research of one or more practitioners 1.3 Applying selected production skills, informed by research of one or more practitioners

Advanced Higher Drama: Production Skills – Outcome 2 and Assessment Standards Outcome 2 2 Evaluate complex production skills by: 2.1 Analysing the use of complex production skills in a current performance 2.2 Analysing aspects of a performance that reflect or contrast with the theories, methodologies and practices of one or more key practitioners

9. Advanced Higher Drama Course Assessment To gain the award of the Course, the learner must pass both mandatory Units as well as the Course Assessment. Course Assessment will provide the basis for grading attainment in the Course award. The Course Assessment is graded A–D. The grade is determined on the basis of the total mark for all Course Assessments together. The Course Assessment will consist either of Acting, Directing or Design.  A performance, which will be supported by a ‘Preparation for Performance’.  A Project-dissertation.

10. Advanced Higher Performance Option A — Acting (50 marks) Candidates will be required to perform two contrasting acting roles, one of which will be interactive and one of which will be a monologue; approximately 20 minutes in total, with approximately 15 minutes for the interactive role and two to three minutes for the monologue. Option B — Directing (50 marks) The visiting assessor will select approximately three pages for the candidate to direct from a prepared Act of the play; 40 minutes of directing.

11. Advanced Higher Performance Option C — Design (50 marks) Candidates will prepare for and produce a scale model set for the play. The set will be related to an identified acting space. The two other areas of design will be chosen from lighting, sound, multimedia, costume, make-up and hair and props. The designer will present their model of the set, ideas and concepts to the visiting assessor. The ‘Preparation for Performance’ will have 10 marks.

12. Project-dissertation The Project-dissertation will have 40 marks. The candidate will be required to demonstrate depth of knowledge and understanding of a relevant performance issue. The candidate will select an area which should allow analysis of performance theories and practice. It will be informed by the work of a current and/or historical theatre practitioner and/or company. The project will take the form of a dissertation of between 2,500 and 3,000 words. Please refer to General Assessment Information for detailed marking instructions.
