Production Job Descriptions Producer: is the ultimate authority, secures the rights to perform the play, hires the director, designers, actors, crews, leases the theatre and secures financial backing for the play Playwright: creates and develops the ideas that ultimately evolve into the written script Director: is the artistic manager of the production team. Coordinates the work of actors, designers and crews to that the production accurately expresses the production concept

4. Production job descriptions pg. 2 Production Manager: is responsible for keeping the play’s production team on track, on budget and on time Stage Manager: assists the director during rehearsals and is responsible for all backstage activity after the show opens

Scenic and Property Personnel Scenic Designer: is responsible for the visual appearance and function of the scenic elements used in the production Scenic Artist: is responsible for the painting of the scenery Paint Crew: paints the scenery and properties Property Master: is responsible for the acquisition and construction of the various decorative and functional props

6. Scenic and property personnel cont. Property crews: TWO TYPES: 1. Property artisans: under supervision of prop master, acquire and construct props used in the production. 2. Property running crew: under supervision of the stage manage, responsible from tracking, placing and maintaining props during rehearsal and performance Technical Director: is responsible for purchasing construction material, supervising the building of the scenery, transporting the sets from the shop to the stage, mounting the scenery onstage, overseeing the work of the scenic crews during rehearsal and performance and maintaining the scene shop’s equipment and supplies

Scene Shop Forman/Master Carpenter: is responsible for the construction, mounting and rigging of the scenery Construction Crew: build the various pieces of scenery and properties for the production Stage Crew: Shifts the set during technical and dress rehearsals and during the performances

Lighting Personnel Lighting Designer: is responsible for the design, installation and operation of the lighting and special electrical effects used in the production- (artistic design of lights) Assistant Lighting Designer: puts the “artistic design of lights” down on paper, continually updates the paperwork for the lighting designer Master Electrician: Implements the light design Programmer: program the lighting console, automated lighting fixtures and projectors

Electricians: does three things: hangs, focuses and runs lighting Hang crew: physically places the lighting instruments where they need to go, puts the color media in and then focuses the instrument Running crew: Light board operator is responsible for the operation of the lighting equipment during the rehearsals and performances

10. Costume Personnel Costume Designer: Is responsible for the visual appearance of the actor, designs clothes, accessories and undergarments for each character Costume Shop Supervisor: builds or supervises the building of the costumes

Costumer Personnel Costume Crew: is divided into several specialty areas: Cutter/Draper: translates the designs into reality, makes or finds patterns and fabric Dyer/Painter: dye and paint the fabric if needed, make things look old or worn, Stitchers: sew the costumes Wigmaster: makes, styles and arranges wigs Millner: makes and finds hats Costume Craftsperson: creates and finds shoes Wardrobe supervisor: is responsible for care and cleaning of all costumes and accessories Dressers: assist the actors into getting their costumes

Makeup Personnel Makeup Designer: responsible for the design and execution of makeup Makeup Crew: Actors are generally responsible for the application of their own makeup during a production, but if the makeup is unusually or difficult, it will be applied by a makeup crew. They also help actors execute the designs properly

Sound Personnel Sound Designer: responsible for everything related to the sound for a given production, provides the designs for all pre-recorded music, sound effects, and reinforcement of the live voices, musical instruments and sound elements Production Sound Engineer: runs the sound mixer during all productions Head Sound Engineer: Supervises the crews who install the sound system and ensures that the sounds systems function properly Sound Crew: does the actual recording, editing, and playback of sound during rehearsals and productions, running of any sound-reinforcement systems during production
