IS ON THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!

 Traits of ADHD  Inattention  Hyperactivity  Impulsivity  Diagnosing ADHD  Dependence upon traits listed. Standards include  Problem beginning before age 7  Present in more than one setting(such as home or school)  Lasting for at least 6 months  Interferes with school performance and social adjustments  Excessive for child’s age /stage of growth  Must not be caused by other disorders  Diagnosis must be by medical professional

 Attention deficit /hyperactivity disorder(ADHD) is a highly prevalent developmental disorder characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with appropriate social, academic, or occupational functioning(American Psychiatric Association,2000).

 The purpose of this study is to seek the impact that ADHD has on early preschool performance of African American males displaying symptoms of ADHD. There are three males that I would like to identify and research the pattern of black males.

 The problem or situation that led to this interest of my study lies deep within my own family background(my son and my grandsons) and the repetitive pattern that I come to observe as an educator.  There is a wealth of literature that supports ADHD in the preschool environment spilling over to other setting such as home, church, etc.  ADHD parental beliefs, preschool children, referral interventions, self efficacy(Maniadaki, Sonuga-Barke,Kakouras, and Karaba(February 21, 2006).  Cross sectional studies indicate that children 4-6 years of age with ADHD have high rates of co morbid psychopathology and substantial impairment in school, social and overall functioning (Lahey et al., 1998:Wilens et al., 2002).

 A pilot study evaluated preschool Puerto Rican children 4-6 years old with diagnosis ADHD and significant behavior problems. (Matos, Bauermeister, & Bernal,2009).  Article conveyed a study referenced neuropsychological characteristics and test behavior of boys with early onset conduct problems.( Speltz, Deklyen, Calderon, Greenberg and Fisher,1999).  In a report made by parent, there were ADHD symptoms displayed as early as 2 years old. The study ratings involved global assessments, yet collapsed across settings(Stormont & Zentall, 199).  Study is inclusive of other com-morbidities emerging from predictors of stable ADHD.(Tandon, Si, & Luby,2011).

 The population will be inclusive of three 4-year old African American preschool males.  Identified males are in Head Start classroom settings, (2) preschool teachers volunteers and support staff  I have chosen this population because of early intervention, signs and symptoms, as well as personal reasons(my son & grand sons)

 Does my child have ADHD?  What are the traits of ADHD  How do I assess ADHD and/or ADHD symptoms?  Will there be improvement of educational performance from strategies and rationales at home and/or school?

ROOM ARRANGEMENT  Beneficial by being indicative of well-defined areas  Identifiable media consisting of real items, photographs and/or hand drawn images  Cultural awareness of identifiable African American labeling of areas DAILY ROUTINE  Consistent  Predictable  Serving as a Framework for Learning  Picturesque Routine with identifiable cultural diverse labeling inclusive of African American format

DATA COLLECTION QUALITATIVE  Parent/Teacher Questionnaires  Surveys  Classroom Observations DATA CONSIDERATIONS  Validity  Reliability  Ethics

 Surveys and Questionnaires will serve as a catalyst of comparison of performance in semester 1 vs. semester 2  Educational improvement performance strategically enhanced documentation first semester (2013) second semester (2014).  Conveying productive individualized student performance individually and collectively with positive measurable academic performance outcomes.

ROOM ARRANGEMENT  First, room arrangement will be changed to meet the need of the preschoolers  Affordable movement space with limited restrictions enhanced by boundaries  Gradual changes with preschoolers and staff implementing changes with explanations by January 1, 2014. DAILY ROUTINE  Next, daily routine implementation of change (Jan. 2014- May 2014) comparing to first phase Aug 2013 – Dec. 2013)  Consistency  Predictable & alternate activities  Identifiable Labeling inclusive of African American Culture.
