2 What is a Progressive? What does Progress mean? To move forward To advance So a progressive would be a person who wanted to advance Actual Definition A progressive is someone who understands that it is the people of our country who make it great, and unless we take care of the people first, we'll never be successful in maintaining our greatness.

3 When was the Progressive Era? 1890s to 1920 What era or “age” was right before this? The Gilded Age

4 What were the main goals of the Progressive Era? 1.Protecting social welfare 2.Promoting moral development 3.Creating economic reform 4.Fostering efficiency

5 Promoting Social Welfare Why? What was going on in society during this time? (chapters 14,15, and 16) What was life like for the immigrants? For African Americans? For women? What reform efforts were already in place? What is needed?

6 Social Welfare continued Social Gospel Movement Settlement houses Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) Salvation Army *Name to remember- Florence Kelley - advocate for women and children. Helped pass the Illinois Factory Act in 1893 which prohibited child labor and the working hours of women.

7 Moral Improvement Why? Some people felt that alcohol was undermining morals Women’s Christian Temperance Movement (WCTU) led the cause. So………………..

8 Introducing Prohibition Banned the sale and consumption of alcohol.

9 Economic Reform Why? *Eugene v. Debs- organized the American socialist party in 1901. He believed there was an uneven balance among big business, government, and ordinary people under the free- market system of capitalism. Uneven Distribution of Wealth – 16 th Amendment

10 The Muckrakers Journalist who wanted to expose the corruption of businesses. Who would they want to expose? –Rockefeller? –“The Jungle”

11 Efficiency *Frederick Winslow Taylor Idea of “Taylorism” –Break down a task into smaller parts –Assembly line –Henry Ford reduces workday to 8 hours.

15 Timeline of Women’s Suffrage 1848 – Seneca Falls Convention 1867 – 14/15 Amd. – call for women’s right to vote 1868 – 1 st failed women’s suffrage amendment 1887 – 2 Kansas towns – women’s suffrage 1890 – NAWSA formed 1878 – failed 2 nd amendment 1887-1896 – put before Congress every year, but fails 1913 – Alice Paul starts Congressional Union 1917 – Catt – new plan, fill WWI jobs, NY-vote 1920 – TN – 1st to pass 19 th Amendment
