ECO-FRIENDLY HOUSEHOLDS PRESENTATION BY CHRISTOPHER BELL MRS. MCNEESE'S SCIENCE CLASS 4 TH PERIOD

BACKGROUND Carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere cause dramatic differences in our climate. One extremely evident example of this is the gradual warming of the atmosphere itself, causing drastic changes in weather patterns. In 2013, nearly 38 billion tons of carbon dioxide was spewed into the atmosphere from use of fossil fuels by households, factories, and automobiles. My aim is to potentially decrease that number by implementing more ecologically friendly ideals into the every day household. I would like to do this by creating a law stating that all houses built from now on, are built using some of these wonderfully eco-friendly technologies.

OTHER WAYS OF HELPING OUT Many of these suggested building campaigns can be quite costly to the household owner, but there are other, cheaper ways of helping the cause. You can use recycled woods and recycled drywall to build the structure of your home. Using straw or hay, you can create an efficient form of insulation between walls of your home. Or you can even just start a simple recycling program to cut down on non-biodegradable litter ending up in landfills.

COSTS Although things like solar panels and thermal roofing can be extremely expensive, in the long run, you can save a very large quantity of money. After a month of collecting and using power produced by solar panels, if you are left with extra power, you can sell it back to the power company to earn back some cash. By doing this, you can easily pay off the price of the solar panels over only a few years of having them.

By approving a law to have most all households built with these technologies in mind and to have some of these technologies required in new households. Not only would it be greatly decrease the amount of carbon dioxide put into the atmosphere each year, but it would also create more permanent jobs needed in our present society with the growing unemployment rates.
