2 MONASTERIES AND CONVENTS  Monastery- secluded community where men work on prayer  Convent- religious community for women  Benedictine Rule 529 Benedict organized a monastery in central Europe Created a series of rules for monastic life where nuns and monks vowed to remain in community for their life, remain unmarried, work for good of community, and own nothing

4 CONVERSION OF EUROPE  Pagan= follower of a polytheistic religion  Missionary= tries to convert others to a particular religion  St. Patrick Converts Ireland Sold into slavery as a child and eventually escaped Returned to Ireland to convert the Irish people to Christianity Founded hundreds of Christian churches After his death the church recognized him as a saint

5  Missionaries to Brittan Missionaries were sent by popes or leaders of the church in the early Middle Ages After the King of Kent converted to Christianity his subjects followed his example Over the next hundreds of years most of Britain became catholic

6  Christianity Spreads Through Europe By 700s and 800s Catholic missionaries were working in other parts of Europe Over time the Catholic faith became part of everyday life in most parts of Europe Holidays revolved around Christian tradition The Church became the center of European society
