Washington D.C. – abolitionist, editor, orator, author, teacher – Seperated from mother at birth; died when 7 yrs – Learned to read around 12, master’s wife and white children  taught other slaves – Escaped at age 20 – Wrote book in 1845 – Believed in education as the path to freedom – Was an alcoholic – Knew and spoke with Lincoln – Spoke at Lincoln’s funeral; Mary Todd gave him Abe’s favorite walking stick – Died of a heart attack or stoke – Pg. 23 & 44 “the plan…” “the holidays…”
