2. Frederick Douglas Was born into slavery in 1818. He was taught to read a few letters as a slave, which lead to him reading. He then taught other slaves.

3. Douglas tried to escape a few times from slavery, but failed. On September 3, 1838, Douglas escaped and headed to Havre de Grace, Maryland.

4. Once he escapes, he went back to help with the underground railroad. In 1837, he married Anna Murray.

6. In 1843, Douglas participated in the American Anti-Slavery Society. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave was Douglas’s first publication in 1845.

7. Douglas is mostly known for fighting for civil rights. Douglas asked Abraham Lincoln to abolish slavery during the Civil War.

8. Douglas also fought for African-Americans to enlist in the U.S. Army. He helped to recruit young African-Americans.

11. Douglas wanted Lincoln to pass the Emancipation Proclamation. The Emancipation Proclamation, on September 22, 1862, allowed slaves to become free in the Confederate States of America.

12. On January 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation named specific states to allow slaves freedom. From 1877 to 1881, he served as U.S. Marshall for the District of Columbia

13. On February 20, 1895, Douglas had given a speech at the National Council of Women in Washington, D.C. He passed away later that day from a heart attack.
