7. POETIC DEVICES Alliteration: the repetition of initial consonant sounds in a sequence of words Ex: The barbarians broke through the barricade. Assonance: Assonance takes place when two or more words close to one another repeat the same vowel sound but start with different consonant sounds. Ex: “Men sell the wedding bells.”

8. ALLITERATION OR ASSONANCE? “He gives his harness bells a shake To ask if there is some mistake. The only other sound’s the sweep Of easy wind and downy flake. The woods are lovely, dar and deep. But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.”

9. FINISH GOING OVER PARTNER ACTIVITY Read Robert Hayden's "Those Winter Sundays," paying close attention to the sounds of the words. What sounds do you notice as you read the poem aloud? Hayden’s "Those Winter Sundays" How do these hard "c" and "k" sounds (consonance) contribute to the mood of this opening stanza? What effect does this example of consonance have on the speaker’s characterization of his father? Why or how? Why do you think, "No one ever thanked him." When you hear this stanza, what do these sounds sound like (despite the words’ meanings)? Read the following poem by Theodore Roethke, paying close attention to the meter and rhythm of the poem. Roethke’s "My Papa’s Waltz" Audio clip of Roethke’s "My Papa’s Waltz" How is this form different from that of "Those Winter Sundays"? Count the beat out as you read the poem aloud. How many beats per line? What effect does it have when the line has extra beats?

What effect does the change from "stiffening cold" to "blueblack cold" have on the poem and its mood and meaning? What effect does Hayden’s change from "aching" to "ached" have on the poem? What about his dropping the "and" that originally began line 3?

12. SUBJECT VS THEME VS MORAL Subject: Topics and subjects that the author discusses or mentions. Ex: Hatred and War; Love and Honor; Good vs. Evil, etc. Theme: a message from the author to the reader through the literature; an author’s opinion on a matter/topic. Ask yourself: What is the author trying to say about the subject? Ex: People are innately evil; Love brings out weakness Moral: A lesson or teaching from the author directly to the reader. (Usually involving words such as never, don’t, do, expect) Ex: Don’t trust anyone; Never give up; Do as your told, etc.

13. DOAS, “THOSE WINTER SUNDAYS” AND “MY PAPA’S WALTZ” Both texts have to do with the following subjects: Ignorance of youth Complexity of father and son relationships Due Monday: Type up a 4 paragraph essay (no more than 2 pages). Choose a subject and discuss how the author creates a theme/message through that subject within both texts. Be sure to connect this theme to a purpose. You must use one piece of evidence per text. MLA format (double-spaces, size 12, times new roman, etc.)
