2 Paleo  10,000 BC – 8000 BC  Heavy Spears with Clovis points, atlatl  Bison, mastodons, giant sloth, other mammals, small game, berries, fruits, vegetables  Nonpermanent pits or brush covered with hides or bark  No evidence of religious beliefs

3 Archaic  8000 – 1000 BC  Spears with atlatl  Deer, bear, small game, wild fruits & vegetables, oysters, shellfish  Semi-permanent shelters; wooden poles covered with deer hides, branches, bark  Burial of dead with tools, weapons, and body ornaments

4 Woodland  1000 BC – AD 1000  Bow and Arrow  Deer, small game, nuts and seeds, squash, gourds – development of agriculture  Sturdy houses in villages  Burial mounds, some with ceremonial objects

5 Mississippian  AD 1000 – 1600  Bow and Arrow  Deer, turkey and other small game; corn beans, and other vegetables they planted  Permanent settlements with wattle and daub houses  Burial mounds with food and ceremonial objects
