4  Head of Ottoman empire  Controlled the government and military  As empire expanded, they became more isolated from their people  Hereditary position (went to a son)  Lived in a harem (sacred, private domain)  Grand vizier led the imperial council meetings & took directions from the sultan  Pashas governed the districts within the empire  Collected Taxes, maintained law & order Imperial Sultans

5  Most were Sunni (a sect of Islam)  Sultan = caliph  Gave religious duties to ulema (administered Islamic law and religious schools)  Very tolerant of non-Muslims (convert or pay tax and worship as you want)  Women had more rights than in most other countries  Inherit property  Could not be forced into marriage  Could get divorced Life in Ottoman Society

7 Architecture and Art  Rugs, silk, textiles, architecture  Biggest contribution was architecture  Open floor plan, domes, towers  Silk industry was huge
