MID-YEAR REFRESHER 2/19/16MORTON ARBORETUM

PROJECT TITLE WELCOME Please take a seat and enjoy some breakfast! Chat with new and old friends! Think about which renewable kit you have: WIND or SOLAR. Take a second to jot down questions and answers to prompts around the room.

Renewable Source Breakout SOLAR KIT Work in small groups to complete the Solar House Design Challenge Discuss options for implementation and its value as a STEM project Discuss what else is in your solar box. WIND KIT Work in small groups to assemble your turbine and create the BEST blades to generate the most electrical output Discuss options for implementation and its value as a STEM project Discuss what else is in your solar box.

PROJECT TITLE Oil and Natural Gas Fun Work in stations Explore – Porosity (formation) – Core sampling (exploration) – Sound waves (exploration) – Perforated well casing (production) – Polymers (refining) What else is in the kits?

PROJECT TITLE Monitoring and Mentoring What is in the kits? – Kill-A-Watt meter – Probe thermometer – Hygrometer – Light meter – Flicker checker – Cans and insulation – Bulbs How can these tools be utilized for a STEM challenge? www.need.org/energyefficiency – SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM!

A flicker checker is a small plastic top-like device used to identify ballast type. A gray scale pattern indicates an electronic ballast, while a checkerboard pattern indicates a magnetic ballast. Determining Ballast Type

Light Meter A light meter measures the amount of light in a space in units of foot candles. Spaces that are overly lit may be using more energy than necessary.

Hygrometer A hygrometer measures relative humidity. Warmer air can hold more moisture, so if cold air is heated, it will feel very dry unless humidified. The NEED Project

Digital Thermometer The digital thermometer can be used to tell if a room is of the appropriate temperature, and compare how spaces may be infiltrated by thermal energy or moving air. Waterproof versions can also help check the temperature setting of your water heating system.

Kill A Watt meter This tool allows you to measure how much power (Watts) an electrical device uses at any given time. By changing the display, it will also measure kWh consumed over a period of time. The NEED Project

Audit the Room

PROJECT TITLE Energy Fair in a Box! What’s in this darn box? How can it be helpful? What exactly can you do with it? How do you engage local community members, media, etc.? How should you set up your fair? BUDGET!

PROJECT TITLE Odds and Ends Please welcome Altaira Citron from ComEd! Field Trip Fun with Mary!

PROJECT TITLE STEM CHALLENGE Table discussion – What is your school’s challenge project? – How are energy and kit materials incorporated? – How are students being assessed? – Have you used some of your budget for this? Marker match up

PROJECT TITLE EVALUATION https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ESPRefresh Take this TODAY or SOON in lieu of paper- based evaluation AND group check-in for February. Can be done as a school or individually.
