5. PM Benchmark. Used to gain an understanding of strategies and comprehension levels in reading. Kit Books Running Record Recording Sheets Software: Install the teachers software on as many computers as you want within the school. This will hold data and print reports for reading scores. Install the admin version on one main computer (Usually Principal or Assessment person.) Software is Windows or Mac Install disk and follow prompts.

7. How to do a running record… It is important that the codes and notes you make follow this patterns as that way other teachers can also gain meaning from your running records.

8. Running Record codes. Errors (E) Errors are tallied during the reading whenever a child does any of the following (use codes given) S = Substitutes another word for a word in the text O = Omits a word I = Inserts a word T = Has to be told a word by the person administering the running record Self-correction (SC) Self-correction occurs when a child realizes his or her error and corrects it. When a child makes a self- correction, the previous substitution is not scored as an error. Meaning (M) Meaning is part of the cueing system in which the child takes his or her cue to make sense of text by thinking about the story background, information from pictures, or the meaning of a sentence. These cues assist in the reading of a word or phrase. Structure (S) Structure refers to the structure of language and is often referred to as syntax. Implicit knowledge of structure helps the reader know if what he or she reads sounds correct. Visual (V) Visual information is related to the look of the letter in a word and the word itself. A reader uses visual information when he or she studies the beginning sound, word length, familiar word chunks, etc. Marking M, S, and V on a Running Record When a child makes an error in a line of text, record the source(s) of information used by the child in the second column from the right on the running record form. Write M, S, and V in to the right of the sentence in that column. Then circle M, S, and/or V, depending on the source(s) of information the child used. If the child self-corrects an error in a line of text, use the far right-hand column to record this information. Write M, S, and V to the right of the sentence in that column. Circle the source(s) of information the child used for the self-correction. You may choose to administer a running record assessment without recording your observations regarding the child’s use of meaning (M), structure (S), and visual (V) cues. Even without recording this information on the form, and you can still use the information on error, self correction, and accuracy rates to place the child at a given reading level.

9. How to assess a running record… Formula Accuracy Running Words – Errors ÷ Running Words x100 Self correction (1:4 or better) Error ÷ SC = SC rate Comprehension (Percentage of total questions correct) eg: 8/10 = 80% Expectation 99% Accurate and 70% or better comprehension.

10. Remediation Plus Remediation Plus Assessments are a series of assessments used to establish students knowledge of letters, sounds and blends. Remediation Plus is recommended for use with students who are showing signs of achieving below expectations.
