6 Short History of Ireland Pope Adrian IV, an Englishman. 1155 he Gave Henry II of England the lordship of Ireland The English began to colonize Ireland In 1495 Henry VII extended English law over all Ireland When Cromwell became “Lord Protector of England” he also invoked strict rule over Ireland and confiscated all Catholic holdings In 1727, Catholics were excluded from all public office and denied the right to vote.

7 In 1798, there was a revolt, but the result was that Ireland relinquished it’s own parliament Ireland was ruled by the British government in London.

8 Potato Famine In 1941 Ireland’s population was estimated 8.2 Million From 1845 to 1850, around 800,000 people died of starvation or of a famine-related disease A further two million people emigrated. Unlike earlier famines, in which the population recovers, the population continued to decline due to both poverty and emigration. In 1851 the population was 6.6 million and falling

9 By 1900, Ireland's population declined to 4.5 million, Approximately 8 million people left Ireland between 1801 -1900 some voluntarily, some “transported” to penal colonies. That’s the equivalent of the entire pre-Famine population.

Civil war – often called “The Troubles” raged in Northern Ireland in the 1970s Internment – Arrest and imprisonment without trial was a tool of the British Military to Contain violence.
