For students graduating between

4 Road to college and careers
Begins in pre-school Key steps on the path to college and careers: Preparation starts in kindergarten Reach a proficient level in reading in the 3rd grade Finish elementary school with good grades, ready to do the work in middle school Finish middle school with good grades, prepared for the high school curriculum Graduate from high school with good grades, ready for college or a career Families must be knowledgeable partners who know and support the academic performance at every step of this path. 4

9 Who uses the “a-g” requirements
The 9 universities of the University of California (UC) system The 23 campuses of the California State University (CSU) system Only public and state schools use the "ag" requirements. Private universities have their own admission requirements

10 What are they used for They offer students a base of knowledge that are needed in the workforce and higher education. By adopting "a-g" classes as the norm and asking students to pass with a 'C', the district is raising the bar for all students to be competitive in the workforce today, whether they go directly to a career or seek a university education.

12 University Preparation Adjustment
LAUSD requirements for graduation meet the minimum requirements for courses needed to apply to a California State University or University of California. However, meeting all the requirements does not guarantee admission. For colleges, universities, and community colleges, it is recommended that students take courses beyond the minimum requirements. LAUSD Requirements for Graduation The Following is Recommended 3 years of math, including Algebra 1 4 years of math, including Algebra 1 2 years of another language other than English (LOTE) 3+ years of another language other than English (LOTE) 2 years Laboratory Science 3 years of Laboratory Science 12

13 An important note about grades
Universities, including CSU and UC, do not consider a “D” grade as a passing grade and do not accept “a-g” courses where the student received a grade lower than a “C” Students who graduate with a “D” grade in “a-g” courses can still pursue educational opportunities after high school, like enrolling in community colleges and later transferring to a University or attending a vocational school. Universities tend to accept well-rounded students, with diverse experiences and skills. Sports Community Service Academic Clubs Motivate your children to use their strengths to help out the community Remember that maintaining a healthy balance between school and extracurricular activities is the most important priority! 14

15 What does this mean to me?
Families Your children will graduate from LAUSD ready for the 21s Century, wether they go directly into the workforce or seek higher education. Students When making the transition into the workforce or college, LAUSD graduates with a high school diploma know that they have the basic level of competency and skills to succeed. Community California employers are assured that LAUSD graduates have the basic level of competency and skills necessary for the workforce in the 21st Century. California Universities and Colleges are assured that LAUSD graduates have the basic level of competency and skills to succeed academically.

16 Overview Courses—all students will take “a-g” courses.
Credits – 210 credits are required to graduate from high school. C or better— to be eligible to apply to universities, students must pass their “a- g” classes with a C or better grade. Clubs – Participation in extracurricular activities increases the chances of being admitted into a 4 year university 16
