What is There to See and Do? Walking tour of Krakow, to include Jewish Quarter and Wawel Castle A walking tour of Krakow will offer the opportunity to see its main attractions including Kazimierz in the south ‐ east quarter of Krakow, the former Jewish quarter, a visit to Wawel Castle in Wawel hill as well as St Mary’s Church and Collegium Maius in the Old Town. An experienced guide will give information on the history of the city and will be able to answer any questions you have on the city.

What is There to See and Do? Auschwitz/ Birkenau Concentration Camps 6 million Poles, including 3 million Jews, perished in Nazi Concentration Camps between 1940– 1945, over 1.5 million at Auschwitz alone. There is a 15 minute documentary about the liberation of the camp. The tour then takes you round some of the surviving prison blocks, the gas chamber and crematorium, with an extension of the tour to the “Death Gate” and housing blocks at Birkenau.

What is There to See and Do? Schindler Trail The Plaszow camp established in 1942, was initially a forced labour camp for Jews. The original site of the camp included two Jewish cemeteries. It reached its maximum size in 1944, the same year that it became a concentration camp. This can be combined with a visit to the glazery established by German industrialist Oskar Schindler. He attempted to protect his Jewish workers, some 900 people, from deportation to extermination camps. When he moved the factory and his Jewish work force to the Sudetenland (an area formerly in Czechoslovakia) in 1944, he prevented the deportation of more than 1,000 Jews.

What is There to See and Do? Wieliczka Salt Mine Wieliczka is one of the oldest salt mines in Europe, which has been working for over 700 years. The oldest part of the mine has been opened to the public as a museum. A tour of the mine takes in the galleries, chambers and chapels on three upper levels, between 64 and 135 metres below ground. All exposed figures and monuments are carved of salt. The highlight is the richly ornamented Chapel of Blessed Kings.

What is There to See and Do? ComArch One of the few polish IT companies, the companies solutions are appreciated in the global markets, where it operates as aa software house providing world class IT solutions. The visit will include a presentation made by the ComArch marketing specialist who is responsible for the IT systems and solutions offered by the company to large corporate clients. One of the topics will be the development of Central ‐ European IT company on the global markets.

What is There to See and Do? Ojcow National Park The Ojcow national park is one of the country’s smallest and most memorable protected regions. With an attractive and varied landscape of scenic river valley, twisted rock formations, and peaceful forests it is an ideal place for a day trip from Krakow. The region’s best-known and best-preserved castle Pieskowa Skala is located in the national park. The most impressive period feature is the delicately arcaded courtyard, a regular feature in travel brochures. Worth a look are the baroque and gothic style rooms in the castle rooms.

Travel Tips Passport: All students travelling must hold a full passport. [In this space, please enter any visa requirements for the country your group is visiting, including any countries en-route. It is imperative that you advise students and parents on whether visas will be required. If you have any doubts, please contact the relevant embassy to check visa requirements, especially for non-British nationals. This could equally be relevant for British nationals dependent on the destination. You will need to apply in good time, as non-issue of visas is not covered under the cancellation section of your insurance, and you may not be allowed to travel as a result.] [If you will have a Collective Passport for your group, please say so here.] If you have any doubts about passports or visa requirements, please see me at the end of this presentation.

Travel Tips European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC) All NST tours are covered by travel insurance, but in addition all travellers should carry a European Health Insurance card. The new EHIC replaced the old E111 form in September 2005. Eligible group members will need to have the EHIC to benefit from the reciprocal health arrangements that have been established within the European Union and Switzerland. If required, card holders can receive medical treatment free of charge whilst on their visit, avoiding the need to claim back money from insurers. Children/wards are covered by a parent’s/guardian’s card. The card is valid for up to 5 years and there is no charge. Forms are available from Post Offices or on-line from www.dh.gov.uk/travellers.
