1 Year One Houses and Homes Knowledge and Understanding of the World We will look at houses and homes found around the school. We will discuss the names of the houses and their specific features. We will talk about homes around the world and homes in the past. We will study maps, talk about a bird’s eye view and learn how to draw plans including a key. We will look at turns and half turns using a beebot. Children will record themselves and others using an Ipad. We will talk about growing and what plants need to grow. Mathematical Development Children will learn how to add three single digit numbers. We will discuss which strategies you could use to find the answer. (bonds to 10, doubles or finding the biggest number and adding on) We will continue to add 10 to a single digit and takeaway 10 from a teen number. Practical and enhanced activities will develop children's understanding. Children will use standard measures when finding the capacity of different containers. Work will also be completed on symmetry and making whole and half turns. Language, Literacy and Communication Skills We will consolidate work covered in the Spring Term and continue to learn new sounds. Children will be encouraged to use the tricky word wall to check and write unknown words and they will be encouraged to use their dictionaries. As part of our topic we will look at creative writing, poster’s, postcards, letters adverts and re-count. Practical and enhanced tasks will support work already covered. Reading groups will take place on a daily basis. Continue to practise spellings weekly. Creative Development Children will look closely at sketching and discuss different pencil strokes that can be used. We will sketch the local area paying close attention to the shapes found in the environment. We will listen to sounds in the environment and create these using our bodies and instruments. Children will be encouraged to play musical instruments in different ways using the correct names. We will follow a beat and discuss our compositions and how we can improve/change them. Personal, Social Development Wellbeing and Cultural Diversity The school promises and rules will be reinforced and the traffic light system continued. Children will also work through a theme called ‘Relationships’ children will be encourage to talk about who is important to them and why. Work will focus on the feelings proud and jealous and how to deal with hurt feelings without hurting others. We will also introduce a worry box for the children to share any concerns they may have. This can be used anonymously. We will also talk about families and discuss who is in theirs. Physical Development Play to Learn will continue to support the children’s physical development skills. Children will discuss keeping safe in different environments. We will concentrate on ball skills – learning a number of ways to send and receive a ball using hands and feet. Children will also be taught a number of team games. Welsh Language Development Incidental Welsh is used throughout the school day. Children will continue to be encouraged to ask to go to the toilet in welsh. We will learn the language to discuss where we live, who is in our family, house types and features of a house. 2 Year One How you can help Knowledge and Understanding of the World Talk about the name of your house and its features. We will be asking for two photographs of your house later in the term so the children can write an advert for their home. Talk about your home and homes in the past. Are they similar or different? Look at maps and plans and discuss what makes them special. Talk about growing vegetables and fruit. Talk about different places visited. Mathematical Development Encourage your child to use mental maths at every opportunity. Talk about how different liquids are measured. Look at containers at home – what unit are they measured in? Let your children use money in real life situations. Talk to your child about the time and the passing of time. Look at and talk about the homework on a weekly basis. We will use the apps Beebot, pixcel to support the children’s understanding in Math’s Language, Literacy and Communication Skills Talk about the topic with your child. Practise spellings on a weekly basis. Change home reader books on a weekly basis. Talk about characters in stories –can the children describe them? Describe the settings the stories take place? Lots of work on the story of the ‘Three Little Pigs’ will be covered so sharing this story at home with your child would be great. We will use the apps Popplet, I movie, comic life and explain everything to support our literacy work. Creative Development Children will be encouraged to build on the skills they have previously learnt in a wide range of art experiences. We will use sketch books to record ideas. A range of artists will be discussed where appropriate in the curriculum. Personal, Social Development Wellbeing and Cultural Diversity Talk about your relationships with different people. Why are they important to you? What special activities do you do with different people? Continue to discuss different feelings you have and how you deal with them. Talk about who is in your family and what makes them important. Physical Development Talk about the movements they can make when out and about. Encourage children to run, jump, skip, hop with increasing control. Continue to develop control of a scissors. Play games with your children that include the use of a ball. Olympic fortnight will take place in the second half of the term with a range of sports activities planned. Welsh Language Development Highlight the Welsh language when out and about. Share any songs with your child. If you want any phrases ask your class teacher. Curriculum News – Summer 2016 Any spare sheets / material / rope / guttering / plant pots will be greatly appreciated for use in our outdoor area.
