1 Math Unit 2 Study Guide Place Value, Addition, and Subtraction (part 1) Dear Third Grade Parents, Attached is our Math Study Guide for Unit 2. The Unit 2 test is on Thursday, October 29 th (Part A) and Friday, October 30 th (Part B). Students who return the completed study guide (signed by a parent) on Wednesday, October 28 th, will receive a bonus “A” as a math grade. The study guide MUST be completed accurately and have a parent signature to receive the “A”. Part A of the test will be paper/pencil and Part B will be on the computer using Interactive Achievement (our online testing program). Please know that we have not yet completed our learning for this unit. We will complete our learning and have time to review before the test. Thank you for your continued support! Sincerely, The Third Grade Team Due on Wed. 10/28 for a bonus “A” in math! Student Name: _________________________________________ Parent Signature: ________________________________________

2 Math Unit 2 Study Guide Place Value, Addition, and Subtraction (part 1) Big Ideas: The focus of this unit is extending knowledge of the number system to 10,000. Students will also develop an understanding of solving addition and subtraction problems through 1,000 using multiple strategies. Students will review and solidify their understanding of place value through ten thousand and compare and order numbers through 9,999. Student will be expected to round numbers 9,999 or less to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousand, count money to $5.00 and make change, and identify the identity and commutative properties of addition. Standards of Learning: Read and write six-digit numerals and identify the place value and value of each digit. Round whole numbers, 9,999 or less, to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousand. Compare two whole numbers between 0 and 9,999, using symbols (>, <, or = ) and words (is greater than, is less than, or is equal to). Recognize and use the inverse relationships between addition/subtraction and multiplication/division to complete basic fact sentences. Use these relationships to solve problems. Estimate solutions to and solve single-step and multistep problems involving the sum or difference of two whole numbers, each 9,999 or less, with or without regrouping. Determine, by counting, the value of a collection of bills and coins whose total value is $5.00 or less, compare the value of the bills and coins, and make change. Investigate the identity and the commutative properties for addition. Recognize and describe a variety of patterns formed using numbers, tables, and pictures, and extend the patterns, using the same or different forms. Vocabulary: commutative property difference digit estimate hundreds hundred thousand identity property inequality is equal to is not equal to (symbol) is greater than is less than ones place value round sum tens ten thousand thousands bills change coins decimal point difference dollar estimate related fact core extend growing pattern number (numeric) pattern pattern relationship repeating pattern
