2 Types of Poetry Miss Davis’s 8 th Grade Literature Class

3 Acrostic An acrostic is a poem in which the first letters of the lines spell a word, often the subject of the poem.

4 Acrostic Poetic words Organized in a pleasing design Etch images in your mind, Turn words into feelings with Rhythm and rhyme. You must read between the lines.

5 Cinquain A cinquain is a five-line poem with this syllable pattern: 2, 4, 6, 8, 2.

6 Cinquain Fireworks Crackle, scorching The inky firmament. Colors burst like confetti and Vanish.

7 Limerick A limerick is a five-line poem with this rhyme scheme: aabba. Lines 1, 2, and 5 have three beats. Lines 3 and 4 have two beats.

8 Limerick There once was a young man from Zool Who finished buffoonery school. As a new jester With the name Chester He longs to be somebody’s fool.

9 Haiku A haiku is a three-line poem, usually about nature, with this syllable pattern: 5, 7, 5.

10 Haiku Misty paint box hues Arch across the gray drizzle. Let’s play on the slide.

11 Couplet A couplet is two lines of poetry that usually rhyme.

12 Couplet I really wish I’d seen it there, That honey bee upon my chair.

13 Clarihew A clerihew is a humorous four- line poem with an aabb rhyme scheme. It is about a specific person, often someone famous. The first line names the person.

14 Clarihew Electric light man, Tom Edison Switched it on above his head again. I guess the “Wizard of Menlo Park,” Got tired of inventing in the dark!

15 Quatrain A quatrain is four lines of poetry that usually have a rhyme scheme.

16 Quatrain Little Sally liked to pout. She always wore a frown. I was shocked when I found out She grew to be a clown.

17 Free Verse Free verse is poetry with no set rhythm or rhyme.

18 Free Verse I asked for a diamond for Christmas. The diamond I wanted came in the form of a necklace. Next year, I’ll be more specific.
