6 Jefferson County has the largest number of seniors, 60 years and older, of any county in the state. About 13.6% of the total population is over age 65. Over 23% of Wheat Ridge residents are over 60 and more than 27% of Lakewood’s residents are over 55. Those are large numbers and they are expected to get even larger in the next few years. 5.4% of our seniors, 65 and over, live in poverty. Of that 5.4%, 21.2% are less than 50% of the federal poverty level. About 1/3 of Baby Boomers across the country have less than $25,000 in savings and the average net worth of a single person in the bottom 20% is $0 or in debt. In the 2010 Community Assessment Survey for Older Adults or CASOA, 28% of Jeffco’s 60+ residents identified housing as a need. Existing housing stock is not always best suited for an aging population.

7 Human Services’ Adult Protection Unit (APS) APS assists seniors who may be victims of scams, exploitation, identity theft, abuse, neglect and other senior victimization With the passage of SB13-111, the county's adult protection unit has seen a 45% increase in all referrals since 7/1/14 for APS. In the last 10 months APS filed 22 legal interventions (guardianships and conservatorships combined) just for the 60 and over age group. The county currently has 62 total guardianships. Great collaboration between Jeffco Human Services, the JCCOA, the District Attorneys office and the Sheriff’s Department

8 Food Assistance In an effort to fight Senior Hunger, the county is participating in a pilot program/partnership with the Senior SNAP (food assistance) Initiative through the Colorado State Dept. of Human Services. Many low income seniors are eligible for SNAP but not enrolled, and this program is designed to meet seniors unique needs in the application process. Transportation for seniors Local Coordinating Council for Human Services Transportation focuses on seniors, persons with disabilities and low income people to assist with better transportation options for these individuals. They utilize a blend of funding, coordination and advocacy.

9 Rena Kuberski has been with Adult Protection for almost 40 years and has been the Program Manager over 60+ staff. She is really the face of Adult Protection for Human Services.
