Integration – the Stuttgart way

Duties of the „new Stuttgart residents“ “New Stuttgart residents” arriving from other countries have the duty to take advantage of all integrating programmes offered to help them take over an equal role in community life. This includes first of all acquiring a good command of the German language. Active participation also means assuming responsibilities within society. Besides starting a job, voluntary civic commitment and political participation help the process of integration into the community, promoting a sense of belonging and encourage new residents to form a bond with Stuttgart as their new home

Duties of the host community Successful integration depends not only on the willingness of migrants to fit in, but also on the quality of projects designed to promote integration in the various institutions. Promoting language tuition and education in nurseries and schools helps ensure the success of all children in the education system, irrespective of their social or ethnic background. The integration process is also made possible by competent advice and support in the social and health services.

Duties of the host community The appointment of qualified migrants as officers in the public services and in companies helps promote intercultural competence in both the administrative and commercial fields. Consequently intercultural orientation of institutions forms a key focus of Stuttgart’s integration policy. Other essential aspects of Stuttgart’s integration policy include involving honorary officers in the work of integration and also qualifying its associations to perform these tasks.

Stuttgart as an attractive location By embracing and promoting cultural, language and religious diversity, we are creating a tolerant and cosmopolitan feeling in our international city and so improve Stuttgart’s ability to attract creative minds and investors. Innovative technologies, talents from around the world and tolerance are all attributes of economically strong cities offering a high quality of living. Good integration policy always has the effect of securing the future attraction of a location.

Stuttgart as an attractive location The Stuttgart area is known for its high-tech industry. Some of its most prominent companies include Daimler, Porsche, Bosch, HP or IBM – all of whom have their world or European headquarters here. The region currently has Germany's highest density of scientific, academic and research organisations. No other region in Germany registers so many patents and designs as Stuttgart.

International companies Companies like Daimler very much rely on foreign workers who come from more than 100 countries. It is also very much involved in foreign trade as more than 50% of its cars are exported. The company says that it needs workers with a foreign background because they know best what customers abroad want when they buy a new car. According to the company’s policy intercultural competence is very important and workers with an international background are given top priority when applying for a job at Daimler.

Aspects of the city’s integration policy Stuttgart’s network operates in a modular way. In each module one specific issue relevant to the integration of migrants on the local level is being discussed. Some of the modules have already been taken up, others will follow. These are the main aspects of this policy.
