Lesson 7 Listening English for Academic Purposes Practice Activities Lesson 7 Listening 2

Listening In this lesson you will practice listening to academic presentations and lessons. English for Academic Purposes Practice Activities Lesson 7 Listening 3

Listening Use this lesson when you have completed the exercises from your coursebook. English for Academic Purposes Practice Activities Lesson 7 Listening 4

Listening These activities refer to lectures given by Professor Wendy Suzuki, Professor of Neural Science and Psychology, Faculty of Arts and Science, New York University, as part of her course ‘Brain and Behaviour’. All the lectures are available on YouTube as part of New York University OpenEd project. English for Academic Purposes Practice Activities Lesson 7 Listening 5

Listening The ‘Brain and Behaviour’ Course looks at the relationship of the brain to behavior, beginning with the basic elements that make up the nervous system and how electrical and chemical signals in the brain work to effect behavior. Using this foundation, Professor Suzuki examines how the brain learns and how it creates new behaviors, together with the brain mechanisms that are involved in sensory experience, movement, hunger and thirst, sexual behaviors, the experience of emotions, perception and cognition, memory and the brain's plasticity. Other key topics in later lectures include whether certain behavioral disorders like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder can be accounted for by changes in the function of the brain, and how drugs can alter behavior and brain function. 7 Listening (Prediction) Before you listen to the first part of the lecture, read the questions and see whether it is possible to predict any of the answers. There are ten questions. English for Academic Purposes Practice Activities Lesson 7 Listening 7

Listening 1. Prof. Suzuki wants to know the geographical background of class members. the number of years the students have been enrolled at university. students’ timetable preferences. 2. This first part of the course focuses on the study of behavior. sheep brains. brain anatomy. 3. Students will have access to a laboratory where they can record their own neurological activity. watch videos of the lectures. create a digital atlas of the brain. 4. Prof. Suzuki identifies two main types of cell in the brain names a high number of cells in the brain. gives details of how the different types interact. 5. The course is divided into three sections which focus on the brain and neurological development over time. problems in its reaction to different stimuli. its different functions. English for Academic Purposes Practice Activities Lesson 7 Listening 8

Listening 6. Prof. Suzuki mentions the Nobel prize because many Nobel winners give her inspiration. it has never been awarded in neuroscience. winning it is an aim of the course. 7. Prof. Suzuki says that interaction has always been a key element of her course. is known to facilitate learning. is not used by her colleagues because the groups are too large. 8. Prof. Suzuki asks the students to introduce themselves to others in the class so that they will not feel shy of her. to kick-start interaction. so that they know who to ask if they don’t understand the lectures. 9. Prof. Suzuki’s third aim for the course is to extend the frontiers of neuroscience. for students to understand how important neuroscience is. for students to interact more intensively. 10. The lectures are being filmed for the OpenEducation project and cameras will focus on interaction among the students. the lecturer and her words. the visual prompts indicated by the lecturer. English for Academic Purposes Practice Activities Lesson 7 Listening 9

Listening (Predicting) Now look at the questions again English for Academic Purposes Practice Activities Lesson 7 Listening 10 hints ….. and think about the hints. hints ….. and think about the hints.

English for Academic Purposes Practice Activities Lesson 7 Listening 11 Listening (Predicting) 1. Prof. Suzuki wants to know the geographical background of class members. the number of years the students have been enrolled at university. students’ timetable preferences. At the beginning of the academic year, in a large university, with a large group of students, two of these alternatives will be impractical and not very useful. 12 English for Academic Purposes Practice Activities Lesson 7 Listening 12 Listening (Predicting) 2. This first part of the course focuses on the study of behavior. sheep brains. brain anatomy. One of these is not likely. And do you think the course will start with behaviour or with the physical entity of the brain? One of these is not likely. And do you think the course will start with behaviour or with the physical entity of the brain?

English for Academic Purposes Practice Activities Lesson 7 Listening 13 Listening (Predicting) 3. Students will have access to a laboratory where they can record their own neurological activity. watch videos of the lectures. create a digital atlas of the brain. One of these alternatives would be extremely costly, one would be unnecessary in the age of internet.. Listen to what the lecturer says for confirmation. 14 Listening (Predicting) 4. Prof. Suzuki identifies two main types of cell in the brain names a high number of cells in the brain. gives details of how the different types interact. English for Academic Purposes Practice Activities Lesson 7 Listening 14 Remember that Professor Suzuki is giving an introduction to her course… You can answer this from the title. Always remember to read the title of what you are reading or listening to. Remember that Professor Suzuki is giving an introduction to her course… You can answer this from the title. 16 Listening (Predicting) English for Academic Purposes Practice Activities Lesson 7 Listening 16 One of these alternatives would be an over-ambitious target, one is not true …. Use your knowledge of the world! 6. Prof. Suzuki mentions the Nobel prize because many Nobel winners give her inspiration. it has never been awarded in neuroscience. winning it is an aim of the course.

Listening (Predicting) English for Academic Purposes Practice Activities Lesson 7 Listening 17 These are all likely to be true; here you will need to listen out for her words. These are all likely to be true; here you will need to listen out for her words. 7. Prof. Suzuki says that interaction has always been a key element of her course. is known to facilitate learning. is not used by her colleagues because the groups are too large.

Listening (Predicting) 8. Prof. Suzuki asks the students to introduce themselves to others in the class so that they will not feel shy of her. to kick-start interaction. so that they know who to ask if they don’t understand the lectures. English for Academic Purposes Practice Activities Lesson 7 Listening 18 Think about your own classroom experience!

Listening (Predicting) English for Academic Purposes Practice Activities Lesson 7 Listening 19 Try to paraphrase these alternatives before you listen. Although you will read words on the screen above Prof. Suzuki, you will need to interpret them. 9. Prof. Suzuki’s third aim for the course is to extend the frontiers of neuroscience. for students to understand how important neuroscience is. for students to interact more intensively.

Listening (Predicting) English for Academic Purposes Practice Activities Lesson 7 Listening 20 Use your own experience of watching the video. And one of these alternatives is very unlikely; think about privacy issues. Use your own experience of watching the video.
