What is Matter? Respond to the first question. Take a minute to define it in your own words: Think about it: Is matter living? Can matter be found outside of the Earth? What kind of matter surrounds us constantly?

Matter = Anything that has mass and volume Below are examples of matter :

Sunlight, Radio waves and Microwaves are NOT Matter, They are ENERGY!!!

Matter has mass Mass = Mass is different from weight! Weight = Units that describe mass are _________________. Units that describe weight are ________________. The amount of matter an object is made of. (All the particles added up) A measure of the gravitational force exerted on an object. grams newtons

Gravity is a force of attraction between objects that is due to their !Gravity BOTH MASS AND VOLUME ARE KNOWN AS PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF MATTER Gravity causes things to fall down. Without gravity, there is no “down” to fall, so objects essentially float. mass

1. What do you think happens to the gravitational force between two objects as they get farther apart from each other? 2. What happens to the gravitational force between two objects, as they get closer to each other?Questions The gravitational force gets weaker. The gravitational force gets stronger.

Did you know? Space shuttles need over 7 million pounds of force to be able to leave the earth’s atmosphere! Getting off the ground! Why do you think the space shuttles need so much force? The upward force has to overcome the gravitational force pushing down.

Weight of space shuttle (Earth’s gravity pulling downward) 4 million pounds 7 million pounds or more Force of thrust from rocket engine Why does it become easier for the shuttle to navigate when its fuel packs are discarded? It takes 4 million pounds of thrust just to get it off the ground. The other 3 million pounds of force make it go… FASTER 

Matter has volume Volume = The amount of space, or capacity, an object takes up; similar to size, but an exact amount (3-D) How could you figure out the volume of this classroom?

Answer these questions Measuring the Volume of Liquids 3. What tool will we be using in labs to measure liquid volume? 4. Define meniscus: The units used most often to measure liquids are Liters (L) and Milliliters (mL) 5. Which unit of measurement is larger: one milliliter or one liter? graduated cylinder (beaker is less precise) Curved surface of water in graduated cylinder due to adhesion (sticking to the sides). Measure from the bottom.

Measuring the Volume of Solids 6. What tool do we use to measure the volume of solids? _____________ Solids are measured in cubic units: Example: 1 cubic cm = 1 cm x 1 cm x 1 cm = 1 cm 3 The volume of a cube or rectangular 3-D shape is calculated by the formula: V = L x W x H The volume of spheres, cones, cylinders and other objects are measured using different formulas! ruler
