5 Push and Pull Factors Many Syrian refugees have sought asylum in the UK. Many initially fled to neighbouring countries first (Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey) before settling in the UK. Lebanon has found it hard to absorb the Syrians due to its size and Jordan has 450,000 Iraqi refugees on top of the Syrian influx. Push Factors from Syria (area of origin) Homelessness – 4.25 million have been made homeless, living in camps inside Syria Violence – over 250,000 people have been killed and many more kidnapped, tortured and raped Lack of economic growth – the civil was has resulted in very high unemployment and low economic potential

9 Pull Factors to UK (area of destination) The UK has a strong welfare system – asylum seekers are entitled to access NHS care and the benefits system (jobseekers allowance of £72.40 a week after living in UK for 3 months) Cultural ties with the UK – family and friends may already be living in the UK Protection – UK promote Human Rights. UK policies include language courses, basic education and vocational training Economic Stability – UK gives refugees a higher chance of permanent employment Humanitarian Aid – the UK has provided the most international aid to Syria making it appear more hospitable towards Syrians

10 Consequences to Receiving Country Funding and finding suitable accommodation Providing schooling and paying for specialist teachers to support language barriers Integration issues Funding health care provisions and benefits Can lead to tensions
