Biology EOC Review 2013 Session 1

Cell Theory SC.912.L.14.1 Describe the scientific theory of cells (cell theory) and relate the history of its discovery to the process of science.

Cell Theory Robert Hooke – studied cork cells, gave the name “cell”. Matthias Schleiden – studied plants, plants are made of cells. Theodore Schwann – studied animals, animals are made of cells. The summary of their conclusions is known as the Cell Theory

Cell Theory All organisms are made of cells. The cell is the basic unit of structure and function in organisms. All cells come from other cells.

Cell Structure SC.912.L.14.3 Compare and contrast the general structures of plant and animal cells. Compare and contrast the general structures of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.

Plant Cells and Animal Cells Differ

A prokaryotic cell does not have internal organelles surrounded by a membrane. Most of a prokaryote’s metabolism takes place in the cytoplasm. 1. Ribosomes 2. DNA 3. Plasma membrane 4. Cell wall Chapter Assessment

This eukaryotic cell from an animal has distinct membrane-bound organelles that allow different parts of the cell to perform different functions. 4. Plasma membrane 1. Nucleus 2. Nucleolus 3. Chromosomes 5. Organelles Chapter Assessment

The plasma membrane separates the cell from the environment. Plasma Membrane

Plasma Membrane structure The plasma membrane is made of two layers phospholipids. ( bilayer) Proteins are attached to the surface. They have different functions.
