Planets in our Solar System Outer Planets

All outer planets are made of gas. They are extremely large, have rings and many moons. They are located between the asteroid belt and Kuiper belt Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune

Outer Planets All outer planets are made of gas. They are extremely large, have rings and many moons. They are located between the asteroid belt and Kuiper belt Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune

Jupiter The fifth planet from the sun Largest in the solar system (11 times the size of Earth) It has a Great Red Spot on its surface (a hurricane storm) and is composed mostly of gas. Jupiter has no seasons. Has 67 known moons;4 largest moons were discovered by Galileo (Ganymede is larger than Mercury and Io has active volcanoes; Jupiter is named after the Roman Supreme god Explored by Pioneer 10-11, Voyagers 1-2

Saturn Sixth planet from the sun Known for its distinguished rings which are composed of ice chunks (ranging from finger nail size to cars) Composed of hydrogen and helium gases Is the least dense of all planets and could float if in water Has 62 discovered moons; Titan is the largest Named after the Roman god of agriculture (farming)

Uranus The seventh planet from the sun Is blue in color from the methane gas Uranus rotates on its side (rolling rather than spinning) possibly due to a collision years ago Has 27 moons and extreme seasons Was named to honor King George III but later changed to Uranus after the mythological god of the sky, Ouranos Explored by Voyager 2

Neptune The eighth planet from the sun Is the color blue from the methane gas Has strong winds swirling on its surface Has faint rings and 8 moons Pluto enters Neptune’s orbit every 248 years and stays there for 20 years, making Neptune farther in space than Pluto. Named after the Roman god of the sea Explored by Voyager 2
