1 State Mandated Risk Management Training at UTSA Sigma Alpha Chi Chapter of Chi Sigma Iota

2 The goal of this training: “The goal is to make sure that everyone on campus knows there are some guidelines to follow before planning activities such as parties and trips, and - just as important - to discourage hazing, boozing, and other illegal activities.” Rep. John Smithee, R-Amarillo

3 Mandatory Topics to Cover: Alcohol & Drugs Hazing Sexual Abuse/Harassment Fire and Other Safety Issues Behavior at Organization Sponsored Events Travel Providing Reasonable Accommodations and Modifications to Address Needs of Students with Disabilities

4 Risk Management Risk management considers the potential and perceived risk involved in student events and programs. It includes monitoring organization activities and taking both proactive action and corrective steps to minimize accidental injury and/or loss.

5 Types of Risk Risk is any issue that impacts an organization’s ability to meet its goals and objectives; Types of RISK: financial, physical, reputational, environmental, etc.

6 Risk Management for CSI When planning social events, initiation ceremonies and workshops make sure the event is planned and monitored with risk management in mind. Monitor attendees and report to a chapter officer if you feel they are a possible risk to themselves or other attendees, or if there is a compliance issue.

7 Alcohol & Drugs POLICY STATEMEN: The University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA) is committed to having a campus that is free of the illegal or abusive use of drugs and alcohol. The University recognizes that the illegal and/or abusive use of drugs or alcohol by members of the University community can prevent the University from meeting its commitments and accomplishing its missions. Further such use jeopardizes the safety and welfare of the individual, fellow employees and the University community.

8 Alcohol and Drugs INTOXICATION: Not having normal use of mental or physical faculties by reason of the introduction of Alcohol; controlled substance; or combination. Having a BAC of 0.08 or more.

10 Drug Use Student Code of Conduct and Drug Use substances defined and regulated under Chapters 481, 484, and 485 of the Texas Health and Safety Code, the minimum penalty shall be suspension from the institution for a specified period of time; and/or suspension of rights and privileges;

11 Policy on Tobacco Use The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) recognizes its social responsibility to promote the health, well- being, and safety of UTSA students, faculty, staff, and visitors. For this reason, UTSA will become a tobacco- and smoke-free campus effective June 1, 2014, at which time, smoking and the use of tobacco or Tobacco Products will be prohibited in and on all University-Owned and Leased Property

12 Hazing The term “hazing” means any intentional, knowing, or reckless act, occurring on or off the campus of an educational institution, by one person alone or acting with others, directed against a student, that endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student for the purpose of pledging, being initiated into, affiliating with, holding office in, or maintaining membership in an organization.

13 Prohibition of Hazing Hazing in state educational institutions is prohibited by both state law (Sections 51.936 & 37.151 et seq., Texas Education Code) and by the Rules and Regulations of The Board of Regents of The University of Texas System, Series: 50101, Section 2.8).

16 Sexual Abuse and Harassment What is Harassment? In the legal sense, it is intentional behaviour which is found threatening or disturbing. Sexual harassment refers to persistent and unwanted sexual advances, typically in the workplace, where the consequences of refusing are potentially very disadvantageous to the victim. 17 Stalking How do I Know if I'm Being Stalked? The stalker may, on more than one occasion: Follow the victim and/or victim's family or household members, or vandalize the victim's property, or inflict damage to property--perhaps by vandalizing the car, harming a pet or breaking windows at the victim's home, or make threatening calls or send threatening mail, or drive by or park near the victim's home, office, and other places familiar to the victim.

19 Bomb threat In the event of a threat, ask questions: - When is the bomb going to explode? – Where is it right now? – What does it look like? – What kind of bomb is it? –– Did you place the bomb? – What is your address? – What is your name?

20 Travel Safety First!!! Be aware of weather conditions/ Comply with traffic laws No texting and driving Have a co-pilot in charge of navigation, radio, A/C, phone calls, etc. Be aware of vehicle condition Do NOT transport, consume or possess alcohol or illegal substances
