1 1.You will need: An iPad, an index card, and a pencil. 2.Log onto Blackboard and to Mrs. O’Quain’s site. Go into the “My Notebooks” section and click on the “In-Class Assignments” folder. Click on the BrainPop link. 3.Watch the video titled “Idioms and Cliches”, listen for examples of idioms. On your index card, write 3 examples of idioms that you heard in the BrainPop video. 4.Write your name, homeroom teacher, number, and date on your index card and turn it in. This task uses: Place technology (app/software/web tool) and icon(s) here. Learning Objective(s): RL.5.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative language such as metaphors and similes. Idioms

2 1.You will need an iPad. 2.Get an iPad and open the Idioms application. 3.Go through some of the idiom examples in the “Study” section. 4.Go back to the home screen of the app and enter the “Topics” section. Choose the topic “Animals” for your quiz. 5.Tap on “Begin the Test” and complete the first 20 questions of the quiz. You can do more if you’d like, but at least 20! 6.Tap on the X at the bottom right side of the screen and select the option that says “YES, Show Results”. 7.Click on the ones you got wrong and review the correct answers. 8.Take a screen shot of your results. 9.Open the “Skitch” app and select the screenshot of your results. 10.Select the text tool and write your name on your results at the top of the screen. 11. Click on the X and select “Save to Photos”. 12. Lastly, go back to the photo stream and go to the screenshots album and delete your UNEDITED screenshot of your results. (Keep only your edited photo with your name on it in the Skitch album.) 3 Idioms 1.You will need an iPad, an index card, and a pencil. 2.Write your favorite idiom on your index card. 3.On an iPad, go to the “Sock Puppets” app and select a sock puppet, background, and props. 4.Record your sock puppet saying your idiom. (You can read it off of your index card, but read with expression!) 5.Tap on the Save button and type in your name as the title. 6.Go into Blackboard on the iPad and log in to Mrs. O’Quain’s BB site. Go to the discussion board and enter the “Sock Puppets Idioms” discussion thread. 7.Tap “Create a Thread” and write your idiom as the title. 8.Tap on the paper clip and then select “Browse My Computer”. 9.Select “Photo Library” and “Videos” and find your Sock Puppet project. Select it and tap “Use”. 10.Tap on “Submit”. Then tap on “Submit” again to upload your project into the Discussion Board. 11.Now view three other students’ Sock Puppet project and reply with an explanation of what their idiom really means. Summary Checklist: *Did you upload your Sock Puppet Idiom into the BB Discussion Board? *Did you view 3 other students’ projects? *Did you respond to their projects with the meaning of their idioms? SL.5.5 Include multimedia components (e.g., graphics, sound) and visual displays in presentations when appropriate to enhance the development of main ideas or themes.

4 Idioms 1.You will need one iPad for you and your partner(s) to share. 2.Open the “iMovie” app on the iPad. 3.Create a movie with your partner where y’all act out an idiom of your choice. 4.Be sure to save your recording when done. 5.Repeat this process for your partner’s idom. (You should be taking turns recording each other for this project.) 6.Go back to the home screen of your iPad and go to the “Twitter” app. 7.Post your video to Mrs. O’Quain’s Class Twitter. 8.Review at least two other posts/videos and comment on each the meanings of their Metaphor and Simile. Summary Checklist: * Did you act out and say your idiom? * Did you upload your video to Twitter? * Did you comment on at least two other posts/videos?
