28 Deepwater Horizon by the numbers Explosion and fire on April 20, 2010 126 crew on board; 11 crew missing and presumed dead USCG and BP began using PIER within hours of initial explosion. The rig sank after burning for 36 hours on April 22, 2010 Total discharge estimated at 4.9 million barrels Resulting oil spill continued until July 15, 2010 when a cap was in place. Well was declared “dead on September 19, 2010.
